<p>The Little Susitna River is a river in Alaska. It originates in Hatcher Pass, at 1,700 ft, in the Talkeetna Mountains which form the northern boundary of the Matanuska-Susitna Valley. It flows a few dozen miles to the Cook Inlet. It contains a variety of hydrology ranging from flat water near the inlet to class 5 water in Hatcher Pass. It is bridged by Fishook Road in Hatcher Pass, Edgerton Parks Road, Welch Road, George Parks Highway, Sushanna Road, and Schrock Road. It flooded in 1972 and again in August 2006, and September 2012 reaching a volume of over 4500 cfs, causing minor damage to homes and infrastructure. It is fed by the mint glacier, Archangel Creek, Fishhook Creek, Government Creek, Nurse Creek, Mary Creek, Swiftwater creek, and numerous other unnamed streams. Popular activities along the river include camping, fishing, wildlife viewing and photography, and hunting.</p><br>
<h2>Access</h2><br>
<p>The river begins in Hatcher Pass, a state recreation area that was originally opened by hard rock mining. This area still has active gold mines and is also open for recreational mining. Much of the land between Hatcher Pass and the George Parks Highway bridge is privately owned, while most of the land below the George Parks Highway Bridge is owned by the state. The George Parks Highway crosses the river at RM 69.5 and parallels the river for about a mile (1.6 km). 42 river miles down stream there is the Little Susitna Public Use Facility, which offers camping and boating access approximately 26 mi south of Wasilla. This campground/boat launch lies within the Susitna Flats State Game Refuge on the pristine Little Susitna River.</p><br>
<p>There are 3 major whitewater runs on the Su. Upper little su (above motherlode) is class 4+, Lower su Motherlode to fishhook bridge is class 4+, and Baby Su (Fishhook bridge to edgerton park bridge) is 3-. Mostly characterized by clear cold water flowing over rounded granite boulders and drops of moderate size. Normally ran at flows of 350-900 cfs on the little su gauge. Below the Carneyville bridge to the inlet is all class 1 floating. Normal summer flows can range from 80-1200 cfs. Floods can bring 4500 cfs of water or more.</p><br>
<h2>Fishing</h2><br>
<p>The Alaska Department of Fish and Game operates a weir to count King, Red, Coho, and Chum salmon in the river. The Little Susitna River weir is located a short distance upstream from the Public Use Area off Burma Road. Salmon fishing is closed upstream of the George Parks Highway. The Little Susitna River provides a multitude of sport angling opportunities. King, silver, chum, red, and pink salmon are available, as well as some Dolly Varden and rainbow trout. Several other less targeted species such as Arctic grayling, burbot, round whitefish and northern pike also call the Little Susitna River home.</p><br>
<p>Burnaby Mountain, elev. 370 m, is a low, forested mountain in the city of Burnaby, British Columbia, overlooking the upper arms of Burrard Inlet. It is the location of Simon Fraser University, the Discovery Park research community, and the System Control Tower of BC Hydro and a new complex of residential and commercial development called UniverCity. In November 1995, the Province of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University reached an agreement to transfer 330 hectares of university land to the City of Burnaby for inclusion into Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area.</p><br>
<h2>Wildlife</h2><br>
<p>In spite of residential development on its western slope and continuing deforestation due to condominium construction around SFU, the mountain still has some wildlife remaining such as deer, raccoons, coyotes customarily roaming local streets, and even a few black bears, sometimes mothers with cubs, who pay occasional visits to the backyards of Westridge residents. Common wild birds include several types of woodpeckers, northern flickers, Steller&#39;s jays, and great blue herons.</p><br>
<h2>Attractions</h2><br>
<p>Burnaby Mountain has a viewpoint facing west at Centennial Park. The yearly Celebration of Light fireworks festival on English Bay west of downtown Vancouver can be seen from the park and attracts an audience on the parks&#39; westward-facing lawns. Along with the outdoor view, Horizons Restaurant lets customers dine while watching the view of Vancouver to the west, or up mountainous Indian Arm to the north.</p><br>
<p>Burnaby Mountain is known for its mountain biking trails and obstacles. Due to its relatively high elevation, snow will often fall on the higher aspects of Burnaby mountain while rain falls in the surrounding cities. Tobogganing is a popular pastime at Centennial Park on winter days with snow.</p><br>
<p>The park is also home to a collection of Ainu totem pole-like carvings which commemorate the goodwill between Burnaby and its sister city, Kushiro, Japan, as well as a fairly large formal rose garden</p><br>
<p>Vøringfossen is the 83rd highest waterfall in Norway on the basis of total fall. It lies at the top of Måbødalen in the municipality of Eidfjord, in Hordaland, not far from Highway 7, which connects Oslo with Bergen. It has a total drop of 182 meters, and a major drop of 163 meters. It is perhaps the most famous in the country and a major tourist attraction on the way down from Hardangervidda to Hardangerfjord.</p><br>
<p>The name Vøringfossen (Old Norse Vyrðingr) is derived from the verb vyrða (English: esteem, revere). The last element fossen, the finite form of foss (waterfall), is a later addition.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The waterfall was hardly known by anyone other than locals until 1821. In that year professor Christopher Hansteen, who was on his way to Hardangervidda to make astronomical observations, estimated the height of the waterfall to be about 280 meters by throwing stones down from the edge and measuring the time they took to fall with his pocket watch. In 1893 it was measured with a string, and the real height was revealed to be 163 meters.</p><br>
<p>In 1880 Ola Garen decided to build a hotel at top of the waterfall. The only way up there was a path with 1,500 stairs up Måbøbjerget together with a bridle path that had been built in 1872 to carry English tourists to the waterfall. In 1891 a new road with tunnels was built along Eidfjordvandet, and in the same year the Fossli Hotel was finished, designed in Art Nouveau style by architect Frederik Konow Lund. All materials for the construction had to be carried on horseback from Eidfjord up to the top of the hill. About 1900 large cruise ships began to visit Eidfjord, and from there passengers were transported by horse and wagon up the valley.</p><br>
<p>The composer Edvard Grieg had a log cabin nearby and was a frequent visitor to the falls.</p><br>
<h2>Hydroelectric</h2><br>
<p>Bjoreia, the small river that flows into Vøringfossen has a hydroelectric dam in the Sysendalen valley above the falls. The water volume in the river is regulated in connection with power development, but there are requirements for minimum water flow of 12 m³/s above its natural rate in the summer, not enough to benefit the tourist trade.</p><br>
<h2>Personal safety</h2><br>
<p>There are several warning signs in regard to the dangers of falling to one&#39;s death.</p><br>
<p>Other measures for preventing deaths, are planned for implementation in the spring of 2015.</p><br>
<p>The River Roddlesworth  is a river of Lancashire.</p><br>
<h2>Course</h2><br>
<p>The source of the river is on the slopes of Great Hill, just above the ruins known as Pimm&#39;s, where the infant river is known as Calf Hey Brook. Calf Hey Brook is joined by another stream occasionally termed Roddlesworth - which rises beneath Cartridge Hill and runs past the ruins of Hollinshead Hall - beneath Slipper Lowe.</p><br>
<p>From there, it follows a northerly course through Roddlesworth Plantations, around the two Reservoirs fed by the river and past Red Lees. The river continues through the Stanworth Valley in Livesey, where it is met by Stockclough Brook, and under the M65 motorway and Leeds & Liverpool Canal.</p><br>
<p>Stanworth Valley was the location for some of the No M65 Road Protest camps. This was the site of a 5-day eviction in 1995, between environmentalists and road builders. At stake was the ecologically valuable river system and diverse woodland.</p><br>
<p>Soon after this, the Roddlesworth enters a culvert close to the Star Paper Mill.</p><br>
<p>The Roddlesworth flows into the River Darwen at Moulden Brow. Between the confluence with Stockclough Brook and the Darwen, the river is known locally as Moulden (or Moulding) Water.</p><br>
<p>For virtually its entire course, the Roddlesworth marks the boundary between Chorley Borough and the unitary authority of Blackburn with Darwen.</p><br>
<p>This border was preceded by that between the Hundreds of Blackburn and Leyland.</p><br>
<p>The river also demarcated the eastern edge of the region of Gunolfesmores in the Middle Ages and, later, the Manor of Hoghton.</p><br>
<p>The name is first recorded in about 1160 as Rodtholfeswrtha, suggesting a derivation meaning "the homestead of Hrothwulf".</p><br>
<h2>Settlements</h2><br>
<p>The Roddlesworth runs through a wooded valley close to the settlements of Tockholes, Roddlesworth, Abbey Village and Stanworth before joining the River Darwen close to Feniscowles.</p><br>

<h2>Tributaries</h2><br>
<p>Finnington Brook joins close to where the Roddlesworth itself falls into the River Darwen. Rising from the confluence of several small brooks, draining Riley Green, Marsh View and Brimmicroft, which meet close to Riley Green Bridge over the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, the brook runs eastward in a small, wooded valley below the canal. The river flows by the hamlet of Finnington, picking up other streams heading north from Stanworth, running by a hatchery and through a reservoir, joining the Roddlesworth on the south side of Moulden Water Bridge.</p><br>
<p>Stockclough Brook flows into the Roddlesworth in the Stanworth Valley, opposite the site of what was probably once a small mill. The brook rises close to Potter&#39;s and flows west and south west, skirting by Lower Whitehalgh Farm before passing beneath Stockclough Lane and the M65 Motorway. Whitehalgh Brook joins near stepping stones in Owlet Holes Wood before Stockclough Brook flows beneath the Stockclough Viaduct, over which the former railway between Cherry Tree and Chorley once ran, before joining the Roddlesworth. Whitehalgh Brook itself rises in Adam Plat Wood where three brooks from Tockholes combine. Sheep Bridge Brook rises near Tithe Barn Cottages and flows northwest towards Yew Tree Farm, before moving southwest through Hole Bottom Wood, where it flows beneath the bridge that gives the stream its name. It meets Chapels Brook, flowing northwest from Close Farm and Weasel Farm in Tockholes, following Rock Lane to Chapels Farm, after which it moves past Pickering Fold and through Heald Wood. Shaw Brook joins at the western end of Adam Plat Wood, having run west and north from its source on Green Hill, via Golden Soney Farm and Lower Hill, past Higher Crow Trees Farm and Lower Crow Trees Farm passing through a wooded vale to its confluence with Whitehalgh Brook.</p><br>
<p>Rake Brook rises at Brown Hill on Withnell Moor and flows northward, draining the west side of Cold Within Hill before pouring through Birch Clough, separating Twist Moor and Roddlesworth Moor and feeding Rake Brook Reservoir, formerly populated by Rake Wood. The confluence of Rake Brook and the River Roddlesworth is in Benson&#39;s Wood, just after the end of the overflow from the Roddlesworth Reservoirs.</p><br>
<p>Rake Brook Reservoir is also fed by another stream rising on Withnell Moor. This unnamed brook flows north, separating Withnell Moor from Wheelton Moor (as well as the two civil parishes) before passing the ruins of New Temple (just south of Solomons Temple), Summer House (formerly known as Botany Bay) and Popes, running east of Millstone Edge, before meeting Rake Brook.</p><br>
<p>Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site is a historically important location in Jefferson County, New York, United States. The historic site is south of the Village of Sackets Harbor, bordering Lake Ontario in the Town of Hounsfield. Two battles were fought near this location during the War of 1812. Some 3,000 men worked at the shipyard building warships, and the village was fortified and garrisoned with thousands of troops.</p><br>
<p>The site includes exhibits, a restored 1850s Navy Yard and Commandants House, outdoor signs, and guided and self-guided tours. During the summer months, costumed interpretive guides re-enact a soldiers camp life in 1813.</p><br>
<p>It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.</p><br>
<p>Pyramid Mountain is a subglacial mound located on the Murtle Plateau in Wells Gray Provincial Park, east-central British Columbia, Canada.</p><br>
<h2>Formation</h2><br>
<p>Pyramid Mountain erupted about 12,000 years ago. It was once mistaken for a cinder cone and is now known to have erupted underneath about 1,600 m of glacial ice. The volcano erupted vigorously and cooled rapidly when the hot lava contacted the surrounding ice and melted it, creating an envelope of water around the rising volcano. The result was a cement-like surface with smoothed cobbles of granite, schist, phyllite and other non-volcanic pebbles which were carried by the ice from many kilometers distant. As a result of this type of eruption, Pyramid Mountain has no crater and no lava flows stretching away from its base. The secondary cone to the east (best seen from Clearwater Valley Road near Hemp Creek) was not formed by a separate eruption, but was simply a slump when the ice melted away from Pyramid, releasing the pressure against its slopes.</p><br>
<h2>Access</h2><br>

<p>The trail to the top of Pyramid Mountain starts at Pyramid Campground. It is 4 km to the summit. The view is mostly southward to Trophy Mountain, Battle Mountain and Dunn Peak. The Murtle River flows along the east and south sides of Pyramid. In some weather conditions, the plume of spray over Helmcken Falls can be seen to the west.</p><br>
<p>Kjeragbolten is a boulder located on the mountain Kjerag in Forsand municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. The rock itself is a 5 m&sup3; glacial deposit wedged in the mountain&#39;s crevasse. It is a popular tourist destination and is accessible without any climbing equipment. However, it is suspended above a 984 m deep abyss. It is also a popular site for BASE jumping. The boulder is located just southwest of the village of Lysebotn, just south of the Lysefjorden.</p><br>
<h2>Geology</h2><br>
<p>Rogaland lies in a weak tectonic zone, allowing the river to dig into the surrounding sandstone mountain. During the several ice ages known to have occurred in Scandinavia, Norway was completely covered in glaciers. Between the ice ages, the meltwater formed and reformed the valley up to 22 times. After the last ice age, global warming caused a rise in sea level, flooding the fjords. The boulder was deposited during the last glacial period, at around 50,000 B.C. As the Norwegian Glacier melted, it was accompanied by a rebound in rock formations as the ice was removed. In Kjeragbolten&#39;s case, the rebound was actually faster than the rising sea level, which wedged the rock into its current position.</p><br>
<h2>Tourism</h2><br>
<p>Kjeragbolten has long been a famed photo op in the Kjerag trails. It was featured in the 2006 viral video Where the Hell is Matt? where traveler Matt Harding danced atop the precarious boulder. Because of its enormous popularity, long lines usually form with people who want to have a photo from the site. Expected waiting time can be anywhere from a few minutes to over an hour, especially when there are cruise ships in Stavanger.</p><br>
<p>The Old Forest Arboretum of Overton Park  is a forest tract and natural arboretum located in Overton Park, Memphis, Tennessee. It is open to the public daily without charge. The forest was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 as part of the Overton Park Historic District. Tree identification began in 1997, with some 70 tree species identified by 2002 when it was certified as an arboretum.</p><br>
<p>Today the arboretum contains walking trails with 49 tree markers identifying 32 species. Approximately three-fourths of the Arboretum was designated as the Old Forest State Natural Area in 2011.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Conservation of the Old Forest began in 1901, when Overton Park was created when the 342 acre Lea Woods was purchased by the city of Memphis. 172 acre of its original climax oak-hickory cover was preserved as the Old Forest.</p><br>
<p>In 1912, the area was described as follows:</p><br>
<p>Plant taxonomist Dr. Tom Heineke was hired by Memphis to inventory the Old Forest during 2008 and 2009.</p><br>
<p>Large trees measured for possible inclusion as Tennessee Champion Trees included a 27 in (DBH) black cherry, a 46-inch southern red oak, a 62-inch shumard oak, and 9-inch pawpaw. A total of 332 flowering plant species were recorded in 85 families; three-quarters of the species were native. Heineke&#39;s management recommendation was removal of evergreen exotic species, such as Chinese privet and pin cherry, which are severely competing with native vegetation.</p><br>
<h3>Tennessee State Natural Area status</h3><br>
<p>On June 8, 2011, Governor Bill Haslam signed the Old Forest State Natural Area bill into law, designating 126 of the Arboretum&#39;s 172 acres as Tennessee’s 82nd State Natural Area. The Natural Areas Program is run by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, while the natural areas themselves are often not TDEC property and are generally managed through cooperative agreements with other agencies and organizations. The bill creating the State Natural Area originally designated 142 acres for protection. To ease opposition from Memphis Mayor A C Wharton and Memphis Zoo officials, 14 acres of forest adjacent to the zoo were removed from the protective area.</p><br>
<h3>Environmental threats</h3><br>
<p>During the development of Interstate 40 through Memphis in the 1960s, 26 acres of the Old Forest were slated to be destroyed to make way for the new highway, which would have also severed the Memphis Zoo from the rest of Overton Park. A grassroots organization, the Citizens to Preserve Overton Park, rallied to protect the forest. In Citizens to Preserve Overton Park v. Volpe the USA Supreme Court finally saved the Old Forest from highway construction plans in 1971. In 1987, the Tennessee Department of Transportation deeded the 26-acre corridor back to the City of Memphis.</p><br>
<p>In 2008, the Memphis Zoo clear-cut 4 acre to make way for a new exhibit, Teton Trek. The destruction sparked the revival of CPOP to prevent further expansion of the zoo into the Old Forest.</p><br>
<p>The Mount Vernon Arsenal is a former arsenal site listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Mount Vernon, Alabama. The site is currently home to the now closed Searcy Hospital, and was formerly a United States Army munitions depot. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 26, 1988 as the Mount Vernon Arsenal-Searcy Hospital Complex.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The Mount Vernon Arsenal was established by the United States Army near the Mobile River, three miles west of Fort Stoddert, and approximately 30 miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico. Along with the Kennebec Arsenal in Augusta, Maine, it is one of the most complete antebellum arsenals surviving to the present day. Established in 1828 as an ordnance manufacturing base, the Mount Vernon Arsenal served as one of the USA Army&#39;s main ammunition plants from its inception until the Civil War.</p><br>
<p>On January 4, 1861, troops of the Alabama state militia took possession of the arsenal on the orders of Alabama governor Andrew B. Moore. The takeover from the small US Army force, commanded by Captain Jesse L. Reno, was peaceful and bloodless. After Alabama joined with other seceded states to form the Confederacy, the Arsenal was turned over to the Confederate Army for the duration of the war. In 1862, after the Battle of New Orleans, the Confederacy moved ammunition manufacturing from the Mount Vernon Arsenal to Selma, Alabama. Selma offered a more secure location farther away from Union forces.</p><br>
<p>The Confederate Army held the Arsenal almost until the end of the Civil War. After the war was over, the Arsenal was returned to the federal government and the site was renamed the Mount Vernon Barracks. From 1887 to 1894 the Barracks was used as a prison for captured Apache people, including Geronimo and his followers. Walter Reed, the United States Army physician who confirmed that yellow fever is spread by mosquitoes, served as post surgeon in the 1880s. In 1895, the site was deeded to the state of Alabama.</p><br>
<p>The Dewitt C. Greer State Highway Building is an eight-story structure in downtown Austin, Texas housing offices of the Texas Department of Transportation since its completion. Located at the southwest corner of 11th Street and Brazos Street, the building was designed by San Antonio architect Carleton Adams and finished in 1933 at a cost of $455,000. It features elaborate Art Deco styling, including decorative carved limestone panels above the front doors.</p><br>
<p>The building is located at 125 E. 11th Street. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places along with the 1918 State Office Building in 1998.</p><br>
<h2>Texas Historical Commission Marker Text</h2><br>
<p>Established April 4, 1917 - Early 20th century Texas farmers demanded all-weather access to markets just as automobiles revolutionized transportation for all travelers. Good roads promoters envisioned a central state agency to organize safe, consistent routes. In 1916 the federal government offered matching funds to build a statewide highway system. In 1917, legislators created the Texas Highway Department, and Texans registered 195,000 automobiles. Agency employees worked in the Capitol, then the 1917 Land Office, and soon the agency opened district offices across the state. In 1921 federal officials approved a 2,900-mile Texas system, ensured by a one-cent-per-gallon state gas tax after 1923. During the Great Depression, federal relief funds stimulated massive road building. Engineers also promoted a new headquarters, and in 1933 completed this state highway building. From here, Dewitt Carlock Greer (1902–1986) served as state highway engineer, 1940–1967, and commissioner, 1969 to 1981, when legislators named the building for him. That year, as the agency&#39;s role expanded to public transportation, it managed 71,000 miles of highways for 12 million Texas vehicles. (1997)</p><br>
<p>Llwyn-on Reservoir is the largest and southernmost of the three reservoirs in the Taff Fawr valley in South Wales. It is owned by Welsh Water. It is located in the Brecon Beacons National Park. The eastern half is in the Merthyr Tydfil unitary authority area and the western half is in the Rhondda Cynon Taff unitary authority area. The reservoir is within the historic county boundaries of Breconshire. The dam is adjacent to Llwyn-On village.</p><br>
<p>Nant Gwinau, Nant Car and Garwnant are the major streams that enter the reservoir.</p><br>
<p>To the east of the reservoir is the 462m mountain of Garn Ddu, and to the west is the 485m mountain of Cadair Fawr.</p><br>
<p>There are a variety of guided walks and waymarked paths. Environmental sculptures can be found on the Wern and Willow walks. The Taff Trail and the Navvies Line paths link Cefn Coed-y-Cymmer to Brecon. There is one bird hide.</p><br>
<p>The Garibaldi Lake volcanic field is a volcanic field, located in British Columbia, Canada. It was formed by a group of nine small andesitic stratovolcanoes and basaltic andesite vents in the scenic Garibaldi Lake area immediately north of Mount Garibaldi was formed during the late Pleistocene and early Holocene. The oldest stratovolcano, The Black Tusk, formed between about 1.3 and 1.1 million years ago . Following glacial dissection, renewed volcanism produced the lava dome and flow forming its summit. Other Pleistocene vents are located along and to the west of the Cheakamus River. Cinder Cone, to the east of The Black Tusk, produced a 9-km-long lava flow during the late Pleistocene or early Holocene.</p><br>
<p>Mount Price, west of Garibaldi Lake, 5 km south of The Black Tusk, was formed in three stages of activity, dating back 1.1 million years, the latest of which produced two large lava flows from Clinker Peak during the early Holocene that ponded against the retreating continental ice sheet and formed The Barrier, containing Garibaldi Lake.</p><br>
<p>The Table is a steep-sided andesite tuya, situated approximately 3 km southwest of Mount Price and south of Garibaldi Lake. It rises 305 meters above glaciated basement rocks. The tuya formed by effusion of flatlying flows within erratics on its summit and lack of erosional features attributable to glacial suggest that The Table was also formed during the early Holocene.</p><br>
<p>Mount Garibaldi is the largest volcano in the Garibaldi Volcanic Belt in southern British Columbia, and is one of the few Cascade volcanoes that is made exclusively of dacite (Glacier Peak is the other).</p><br>
<p>Round Mountain is an eroded volcanic outcrop, located 8 km southwest of Eanastick Meadows, 9 km east of Brackendale and 10 km south of Mount Garibaldi. It is the highpoint of Paul Ridge and last erupted during the Pleistocene.</p><br>
<p>Opal Cone is a cinder cone on the southeast flank of Mount Garibaldi. It is the source of a 15 km long broad dacite lava flow with prominent wrinkled ridges. The lava flow is unusually long for a silicic lava flow.</p><br>
<p>Clinker Peak is a stratovolcano on the west shoulder of Mount Price on the west side of Garibaldi Lake. It has produced two large lava flows about 9,000 years ago.</p><br>
<p>Glacier Pikes is a lava dome with two rocky points at the southern end of the Sentinel Glacier Neve.</p><br>
<p>Mount Brew is a subglacial mound, which last erupted during the Pleistocene.</p><br>
<h2>Hazards</h2><br>
<p>Future eruptions within the region could endanger the municipalities of Whistler and Squamish. Even though no Plinian eruptions are recognized, even Peléan eruptions may possibly create large amounts of volcanic ash that will possibly affect these close by villages. Ash columns from the volcanoes might rise hundreds of metres and could make this a serious hazard for air traffic.</p><br>
<p>The unstable lava formation of The Barrier has in the past unleashed several debris flows in the area below the lake, most recently in 1855-56 forming a large boulder field which gives Rubble Creek its name. Concerns about the Barrier&#39;s instability due to volcanic, tectonic, or heavy rainfall activity prompted the provincial government to declare the area immediately below it unsafe for human habitation in 1981. This led to the evacuation of the nearby village of Garibaldi, and the relocation of residents to new recreational subdivisions away from the hazard zone. Should the Barrier completely collapse, Garibaldi Lake would be entirely released and downstream damage in the Cheakamus and Squamish Rivers would be considerable, including major damage to the town of Squamish and possibly an impact wave on the waters of Howe Sound that would reach Vancouver Island.</p><br>
<p>The Scottish Rite Dormitory is a private women&#39;s dorm for the University of Texas built and operated by the Scottish rite of Freemasons in Austin, Texas. Located just north of campus on 27th Street and Whitis Avenue, the colonial revival style building was completed in 1922 during a housing shortage on campus and was intended to provide housing for the daughters and relatives of Master Masons.</p><br>
<p>Since its origin the building has relaxed its entry requirements somewhat, but is still well-known among UT students for its strict rules against male visitors. It is one of the more expensive private dorms in the UT area. Many girls are wait-listed for entry to the dorm beginning in high school or earlier.</p><br>
<p>The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.</p><br>
<p>The Texas Federation of Womens Clubs Headquarters, now referred to as simply "The Mansion," or "The Fed," is a Georgian Revival mansion located on the southwest corner of 24th Street and San Gabriel Street in Austin, Texas, United States. The building was completed in 1931 to be the headquarters for the Texas Federation of Womens Clubs, with assistance from local philanthropist Clara Driscoll. It was designed by Dallas architect Henry Coke Knight.</p><br>
<p>The building sits adjacent to the historic Neill-Cochran House (1855) and is a prominent feature of the Judge&#39;s Hill neighborhood, to the west of the University of Texas.</p><br>
<p>The Mansion was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 24, 1985. It is one of the best remaining examples of Georgian Revival architecture in Texas. Today it is mostly used to host weddings and receptions, though every Thursday night since 1999 the holds a swing dance on the 4,000 ft&sup2; sprung polished oak floors of the Texas Federation of Women&#39;s Clubs Headquarters.</p><br>
<p>University Baptist Church in Austin, Texas, USA, was organized in 1907–1908 to serve students at the University of Texas. Originally leasing space from the Highland Presbyterian Church, the church was officially chartered on September 27, 1908, with 80 original members.</p><br>
<p>In 1914, the church absorbed members of the then-defunct Central Baptist Church, soon growing to almost 500 members. In 1916 the church purchased land at the southwest corner of 22nd Street and Guadalupe Street to construct a church building. Philadelphia architect Albert Kelsey designed the structure in the Spanish Colonial Revival style to match the University of Texas buildings across the street. It was built to house 1,100 people and was an immediate cornerstone of the "Drag" (Guadalupe Street).</p><br>
<p>The church welcomed African Americans as members in 1943, becoming one of the first integrated churches in the Southern Baptist Convention. The church was expelled from the Austin Baptist Association for doing so (though it was later readmitted). The church earned further notoriety in the 1970s when it began ordaining women as deacons.</p><br>
<p>In 1995, the church was again expelled from the Austin Baptist Association for ordaining a gay men as deacon. The church stood by its position, and in 1997, for this and other reasons, the church voted to disaffiliate itself with the Southern Baptist Convention. In recent years the church has become known for its welcoming stance toward homosexuals and has joined several like-minded church organizations. It is affiliated with the Alliance of Baptists, the American Baptist Churches USA, the Association of Welcoming and Affirming Baptists, and the Baptist Peace Fellowship of North America.</p><br>
<p>The main church building, completed in 1921, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. It features a carved stone facade facing Guadalupe Street and cathedral ceiling vaults with an excellent acoustical signature, and has hosted performances by Willie Nelson and Larry Gatlin. A student union building was added to the west in 1949, featuring a Charles Umlauf sculpture relief over the front door.</p><br>
<p>Weeksville is a neighborhood founded by African American freedmen in what is now Brooklyn, New York, United States, part of the present-day neighborhood of Crown Heights.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Weeksville was named after James Weeks, a stevedore and African-American ex-slave from Virginia, who in 1838 (just 11 years after the abolition of slavery in New York State) bought a plot of land from Henry C. Thompson, a free African-American and land investor, in the Ninth Ward of central Brooklyn. Thompson had acquired the land from Edward Copeland, a politically minded European American and Brooklyn grocer, in 1835.Previously Copeland bought the land from an heir of John Lefferts, a member of one of the most prominent and land-holding families in Brooklyn. There was ample opportunity for land acquisition during this time, as many prominent land-holding families sold off their properties during an intense era of land speculation. Many African Americans saw land acquisition as their opportunity to gain economic and political freedom by building their own communities. The City of New York confuses Weeks with a man of the same name who lived 1776-1863.</p><br>
<p>The village itself was established by a group of African-American land investors and political activists, and covered an area in the borough&#39;s eastern Bedford Hills area, bounded by present-day Fulton Street, East New York Avenue, Ralph Avenue and Troy Avenue. A 1906 article in the New York Age recalling the earlier period noted that James Weeks "owned a handsome dwelling at Schenectady and Atlantic Avenues."</p><br>
<p>By the 1850s, Weeksville had more than 500 residents from all over the East Coast (as well as two people born in Africa). Almost 40 percent of residents were southern-born. Nearly one-third of the men over 21 owned land; in antebellum New York, unlike in New England, non-white men had to own real property (to the value of $250) and pay taxes on it to qualify as voters. The village had its own churches (including Bethel Tabernacle African Methodist Episcopal Church and the Berean Missionary Baptist Church), a school ("Colored School no. 2", now P.S. 243), a cemetery, and an old age home. Weeksville had one of the first African-American newspapers, the Freedman&#39;s Torchlight, and in the 1860s became the national headquarters of the African Civilization Society and the Howard Colored Orphan Asylum. In addition, the Colored School was the first such school in the USA to integrate both its staff and its students.</p><br>
<p>During the violent New York Draft Riots of 1863, the community served as a refuge for many African-Americans who fled from Manhattan.</p><br>
<p>After the completion of the Brooklyn Bridge and as New York City grew and expanded, Weeksville gradually became part of Crown Heights, and memory of the village was largely forgotten.</p><br>
<h2>Rediscovery of Weeksville and the Hunterfly Road Houses</h2><br>
<p>The search for Historic Weeksville began in 1968 in a Pratt Institute workshop on Brooklyn and New York City neighborhoods led by historian James Hurley. After reading of Weeksville in Brooklyn&#39;s Eastern District, a 1942 book by Brooklyn historian Eugene Ambruster, Hurley and Joseph Haynes, a local resident and pilot, consulted old maps and flew over the area in an airplane in search of surviving evidence of the village.</p><br>
<p>Four historic houses (now known as the Hunterfly Road Houses) were discovered off Bergen Street between Buffalo and Rochester Avenues, facing an old lane—a remnant of Hunterfly Road, which was at the eastern edge of the 19th century village.</p><br>
<p>As of 2015 Weeksville has been receiving attention from investment types, according to a broker with Douglass Elliman. There are still investment finds to be had in this Brooklyn area. There are homes priced between $549,000 and $977,000. Weeksville&#39;s close proximity to public transportation is a major attraction to these new investors who have their eyes set on Weeksville.</p><br>
<h2>Weeksville Heritage Center</h2><br>
<p>The 1968 discovery of the Hunterfly Road Houses led to the formation of The Society for the Preservation of Weeksville and Bedford-Stuyvesant History (now the Weeksville Heritage Center).</p><br>
<p>Hunterfly Road Historic District is a national historic district. It consists of four contributing residential buildings, erected no earlier than the 1860s, within the 19th century free Black community of Weeksville, along a road dating back to American Indian tenure of the area which led to shellfish beds at the Jamaica Bay end of Fresh Kill/Creek. Sections of Hunterfly Road started closing after 1835. The houses are one and one half to -story wood-frame dwellings.</p><br>
<p>In 1970 the houses were declared New York City Landmarks, and in 1972 were placed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Hunterfly Road Historic District.</p><br>
<p>The houses were rehabilitated in the 1980s, and again after vandalism in the 1990s. In 2005, following a $3 million restoration, the houses reopened to the public as the Weeksville Heritage Center, with each house showcasing a different era of Weeksville history.</p><br>
<p>Construction of an 19,000 ft&sup2; education and cultural center adjacent to the houses is complete.</p><br>

<p>Woodlawn, also known as the Pease Mansion as well as Governor Shiver&#39;s Mansion, is a pre-Civil War mansion located at 30.2871° -97.7581° in Austin, Texas. The Greek Revival style house was owned by two Texas governors. Some notable people that have visited the mansion include Sam Houston, General George Custer, Elisabet Ney, Will Rogers, and Edith Head. Woodlawn was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 25, 1970.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The site of Woodlawn originally consisted of 365 acre in West Austin. Then Texas State Comptroller James Shaw commissioned master builder Abner H. Cook (who also designed the Texas Governors Mansion) to build a house for him and his fiancee. Shaws fiancee later broke off the engagement, but Shaw soon found another woman that he married and they lived in the house, which was completed in 1853.</p><br>
<p>Tragedy struck when Shaw&#39;s child died at the age of two and his wife died a few months later. Shaw sold the estate to Texas governor Elisha M. Pease and his wife Lucadia Christiane Niles Pease in 1857 and Shaw moved to Galveston. The Peases named the estate Woodlawn. Pease developed most of the land surrounding Woodlawn into the present-day neighborhood of Enfield.</p><br>
<p>Four generations of the Pease family lived at Woodlawn until 1957 when Niles Graham sold the house and its three remaining acres to outgoing Texas governor Allan Shivers and his wife Marialice Shary Shivers. The Shivers moved into Woodlawn on January 15, 1957, almost 100 years to the day when the Peases first moved into Woodlawn.</p><br>
<p>On October 27, 1975, the Shivers donated Woodlawn to the University of Texas at Austin and University of Texas–Pan American with the stipulation that they could live there until their deaths. Allan Shivers died in 1985 and Marialice died on September 29, 1996. The University of Texas sold Woodlawn to the State of Texas in December, 1997 for $2.6 million. The proceeds endowed the Allan Shivers Chair in Law and Banking at the University of Texas School of Law and the Marialice Shivers Chair in Fine Arts at the University of Texas–Pan American.</p><br>
<p>The state bought Woodlawn as Texas Lieutenant Governor Bob Bullock dreamed of making it the new Texas Governor&#39;s Mansion. Bullock died in 1999 and his dream passed with him. Since it no longer had a purpose for the estate and it was expensive to maintain, the State of Texas put Woodlawn up for sale in 2002 by sealed bid. Actress Sandra Bullock reportedly toured the home as a possible buyer but did not bid on it. Only one bid was received and it was not credible.</p><br>
<p>The state then began to contact interested buyers. Austin investor and entrepreneur Jeff Sandefer signed a contract to purchase the estate in May 2002. The $3.1 million deal broke down in August 2002 as Sandefer was frustrated by the restrictions and restoration requirements from Austin&#39;s Historic Landmark Commission and what it might cost to implement. Finally, on November 15, 2002, the estate sold to Mr. Sandefer for $2,851,100 via the holding company Woodlawn-Pease, LLC.</p><br>
<p>Today, Woodlawn is the centerpiece of the Old West Austin Historic District which consists mostly of land formerly owned by the Pease family.</p><br>
<p>The Old West Austin Historic District is a residential community in Austin, Texas, United States. It is composed of three neighborhoods located on a plateau just west of downtown Austin: Old Enfield, Pemberton Heights, and Bryker Woods. Developed between 1886 and 1953, the three historic neighborhoods stretch from Mopac Expressway east to Lamar Boulevard, and from 13th Street north to 35th Street. It borders Clarksville Historic District and the West Line Historic District to the south.</p><br>
<p>The streetcar had propelled Austin&#39;s earlier local suburban development, but Enfield, Pemberton Heights, and Bryker Woods were the city’s first automobile suburbs. As a well-preserved collection of early-to-mid-20th century residences, the historic district evokes the measured spread of suburban development that paralleled the city’s steady growth. The three neighborhoods that together form Old West Austin were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.</p><br>
<h2>Settlement of Old West Austin</h2><br>
<p>For much of the 19th century, Shoal Creek and West Avenue defined the western edge of the city. Austin was planned on a 640-acre site on a bluff above the Colorado River, nestled between Shoal Creek (West Avenue) to the west and Waller Creek (East Avenue) to the east Edwin Waller in 1839. The story of the settlement of Old West Austin begins with the oldest and best-known home in the area, Woodlawn. James B. Shaw, an Irish immigrant who served as State Comptroller in Texas Governor Elisha M. Pease&#39;s administration, purchased several hundred acres of land west of Austin in 1846.</p><br>
<p>Shaw commissioned Austin architect Abner Cook to build a two-story Greek Revival mansion on his property. The house was finished in 1853, one year before Cook built the Texas Governors Mansion. Almost as soon as the building was completed Shaw abandoned the idea of living there because of family tragedies. In 1856, Governor Pease bought Woodlawn, and it remained in his family for nearly fifty years. Woodlawns adjoining acreage would eventually be sold and subdivided to create the Enfield neighborhood.</p><br>
<p>Following emancipation at end of the Civil War, Texas Governor Pease sold and gave some of his plantation land to his freed black slaves. In 1871 this neighboring area came to be known as Clarksville and was legally set apart from the other areas of town specifically for the freed black slaves.</p><br>
<p>It was called Clarksville because Charles (Griffin) Clark, a land developer with an eye to reselling to the newly freed slaves, purchased a 365 acretract of land from former slaves where he founded the town of Clarksville, less than one-half mile from Woodlawn.</p><br>
<p>Other important West Austin developments during the 1870s included the establishment of the International and Great Northern Railroad, which defines the historic district’s western boundary, and the establishment of Pease Park, which define the district&#39;s eastern boundary. The land was donated to the city by the Pease family. Shoal Creek is the centerpiece of Pease Park. The waterway attracted recreational use as early as the mid-nineteenth century.</p><br>
<h3>Old Enfield</h3><br>
<p>The oldest and southernmost neighborhood in the historic district is Old Enfield. Its approximate boundaries are Windsor Road on the north, Pease Park on the east, 13th Street to the south, and the Mo-Pac Expressway on the west. Originally part of the Pease family’s plantation just west of Austin, the neighborhood was subdivided in 1910 by the Enfield Realty and Home Building Company. Old Enfield is home to many of the oldest colonial style-homes in Austin, including Woodlawn which was built by Texas Governor&#39;s Mansion architect Abner Cook.</p><br>
<p>Additionally, Old Enfield encompasses several additions platted between 1914 and 1948. Two later additions were platted on the west side of the historic district after 1948. The plan for Old Enfield is largely intact incorporating several small island parks along curvilinear streets at the edge of Pease Park.</p><br>
<h3>Pemberton Heights</h3><br>
<p>Due north of Old Enfield is the suburb of Pemberton Heights. The area that would become Pemberton Heights was acquired in 1858 by Judge John Harris, who was the attorney general for Governor Pease and husband of the daughter of Samuel Rhoads Fisher, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. S.W. Fisher, president of the Austin Development Company, also became an owner and ultimately developed the land. The subdivision was named after James Pemberton (1723–1809), an ancestor of the Fischer family who received notoriety because of his political views during the days of the American colonies. The Fisher family went on to inherit the farm and would establish the Austin Land Company. In 1927, the company built a bridge across Shoal Creek and began development.</p><br>
<p>Between 1927 and the early 1940s, Pemberton Heights was developed in 12 sections. Pemberton Heights is primarily one to two-story single-family residences and not as many duplexes as the other neighborhoods. It has, on average, the largest houses and most spacious lots in the Old West Austin Historic District.</p><br>
<p>Over 25 structures in Pemberton Heights have been designated as Austin Historic Landmarks by the City Council including the Windsor Road Bridge, which was built in 1928. Its importance stems not only from its architectural merit, but also because prior to its construction, Pemberton Heights and other Old West Austin area residents could only access downtown by crossing Shoal Creek on the State Street Bridge, which is now a pedestrian bridge adjacent to the 34th Street Bridge.</p><br>
<h3>Bryker Woods</h3><br>
<p>Bryker Woods is the northernmost suburb of the Old West Austin Historic District. The suburb encompasses several parcels of land that were platted between 1886 and 1951. Bryker Woods experienced intense development between 1936 and 1940.</p><br>
<p>By the late 1990s, the State of Texas began exploring improvement and expansion of Mopac Expressway. By 2000, Bryker Woods, Pemberton Heights, Old Enfield, and Old West Austin neighborhoods organized because of concerns over the potential expansion of Loop 1, which they believed would result in the demolition of as many as 80 houses. In 2003, they were successful in establishing the Old West Austin Historic District. One significant aspect of this historic designation is that federal law requires additional studies, review, and approval if using federal dollars on a project that could result in the demolition of properties in the district, which adds significant time and cost to the project. As federal dollars are needed for the expansion of Loop 1, this designation prevented the expansion of Loop 1 beyond its current right-of-way within these neighborhoods.</p><br>

<p>Mount Pierce is a mountain in the Presidential Range in the White Mountains of New Hampshire that is approximately 4,310 feet  high. Formerly called Mount Clinton for 19th-century governor DeWitt Clinton of New York, in 1913 it was renamed after President Franklin Pierce , the only president born in New Hampshire, although the newer name is not universally accepted.</p><br>
<p>Its summit offers a wide view of New Hampshire&#39;s mountains.</p><br>
<p>The shortest trail route to the summit of Pierce is from a parking lot to the west of the mountain on Mount Clinton Road just off Route 302. The trail primarily follows the Crawford Path — the oldest continually used hiking trail in the United States, having been established in 1819 by Abel Crawford. The Appalachian Trail and Webster Cliff Trail approach from Mount Jackson in the south and meet Crawford Path just north of the summit before continuing to the northeast. Mount Eisenhower and Mount Monroe lie on the ridge northeast of Mt. Pierce. All three of these peaks are included on the peak-bagging list of four-thousand footers in New Hampshire.</p><br>
<p>The Lundberg Bakery  is a historic building in downtown Austin, Texas. It is located at 1006 Congress Avenue, half a block south of the Texas State Capitol grounds. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 17, 1969.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The building is constructed of limestone with a brick facade, and features a large cast-iron eagle at the peak of the gabled roof overlooking Congress Avenue. The building was completed for use as a bakery in 1876. The building served as a bakery until the death of its Swedish born owner, Charles Lundberg (1835-1895), who had settled into Austin during 1872. At the time the bakery first began operations, bread was not sold wrapped or packaged. People would wait in line with cloth lined baskets to place the bread in after buying it. Short story writer William Sydney Porter frequented the bakery as he passed it to and from work while employed at the General Land Office Building.</p><br>
<p>The building was used as a bakery until 1936, and after that for a variety of purposes. The building changed hands frequently until being bought and refurbished by the Austin Heritage Society in 1962. It was threatened with demolition in 1970, when a new building was planned for the Texas Department of Transportation, but saved when excavations next door uncovered the foundations of the previous state capitol building (a temporary structure built in 1882). Following this discovery, the foundations were converted to a historical plaza, and the bakery was saved.</p><br>
<p>The Old Bakery was sold to the State of Texas which deeded the building and property to the City of Austin in 1980.</p><br>
<p>The Old Bakery and Emporium now houses the Lundberg-Maerki Historical Collection. The art gallery located on the third floor features a rotating schedule of exhibitions including artworks of local artists. The Old Bakery and Emporium operates as a consignment store spotlighting handcrafted gifts and fine art by local artisans with a visitor information center for tourist looking for fun attractions around Austin.</p><br>
<p>Shorabil Lake  is a lake located in a hilly area south of the Iranian city of Ardabil. Ardabil University is located near the lake.</p><br>
<p>The surface of the lake is 640,000 m², and is covered with a thin white layer of minerals which are useful in healing skin diseases and rheumatism. The leisure complex of Shorabil is located near the lake. The lake is ringed by a scenic roadway offering views of the lake and the nearby Sabalan mountain.</p><br>
<p>The basin was covered with mud and high concentrations of salt and other minerals so that no fish could survive. In 1998, the government of Ardabil started diluting the lake water by linking rivers from the surrounding area. After almost 2 years they also started growing a kind of fish called "ghezel-aala" in the lake which is famous for having pink meat and wonderful taste. In 1999 a floating restaurant was built and placed in the middle of the lake. which was transferred to the government but it was later shifted to the shore as they could not handle the maintenance and other technical difficulties.</p><br>

<p>Carlyle Lake is a 26,000 acre reservoir largely located in Clinton County, Illinois, with smaller portions of the lake within Bond and Fayette counties. It is the largest man-made lake in Illinois, and the largest lake wholly contained within the state.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The lake was created by the USA Army Corps of Engineers, which built Carlyle Dam across the Kaskaskia River, thereby creating a reservoir filled to a mean elevation of 446 feet (136 m) above sea level. The region of Southern Illinois where Carlyle Lake now stands is relatively flat, and the lake is relatively shallow.</p><br>
<p>As part of the lakes planning process, 600 graves were exhumed from seven small rural cemeteries, and 69 oil wells were capped. Construction of the dam began on October 18, 1958, and the reservoirs planned expanse slowly filled with water. The lake was dedicated on June 3, 1967.</p><br>
<h2>The lake today</h2><br>
<p>Grouped around the lake are the Dam West, Dam East, Coles Creek, Boulder and Coles Creek Recreation Areas operated by the USA Army Corps of Engineers and the Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area, South Shore State Park, and the Carlyle Lake Wildlife Management Area operated by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.</p><br>
<p>Carlyle Lake is managed for flood control purposes, which means that the lake level fluctuates sharply with the seasons. Creeks that flow into the lake sometimes alternate between being three-mile-long estuaries and being mud flats. For this reason, it is not an ideal lake for some forms of shoreline recreation, such as swimming.</p><br>
<p>Carlyle Lake is used by many for boating, particularly sailing, and fishing. Many use the lake to catch channel catfish, flatheads, largemouth bass, white bass, crappie, and bluegill. The bass scene is particularly lively, with several tagged-bass and catch-and-release championships annually.</p><br>
<p>The lake is separated into two unequal parts by a 3.5-mile-long (6 km) railroad embankment, and five bridges, carrying the tracks of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe.</p><br>
<p>The lake continues to be managed by the USA Army Corps of Engineers.</p><br>
<p>The lake is the subject of Sufjan Stevens&#39; song, "Carlyle Lake" on The Avalanche: Outtakes and Extras from the Illinois Album.</p><br>
<p>The Table, sometimes called Table Mountain, is a 2,021 m high flow-dominated andesite tuya located 4 km south of Garibaldi Lake, 15 km northeast of Cheekye and 5 km north of Mount Garibaldi, British Columbia, Canada. It rises over 530 m above the surface of Garibaldi Lake, which lies less than 1 km to the north.</p><br>
<p>The Table is almost impossible to climb because sections of the volcano have collapsed, creating steep and exceptionally rotten rock walls on all sides.</p><br>
<h2>Geology</h2><br>
<p>The Table is part of the Garibaldi Lake volcanic field, a volcanic field that includes a group of nine small andesitic stratovolcanoes and basaltic andesite vents formed during the early Holocene. This in turn is part of the Garibaldi Volcanic Belt and of the Cascade Volcanic Arc that run from southwestern British Columbia to northern California caused by subduction of the Juan de Fuca Plate and Explorer Plate under the North American Plate at the Cascadia subduction zone.</p><br>
<p>Canadian geologist Bill Mathews proposed in 1951 that The Table formed when magma intruded into and melted a vertical tube in the overlying Cordilleran Ice Sheet. The partially molten mass of hornblende-phyric andesite cooled as a large block, with gravity flattening its upper surface. Horizontal columns occur at numerous locations along the periphery of the mass. The absence of glacial erosion of the tuya suggests that it erupted during the early Holocene, just prior to the disappearance of the ice sheet. Similar formations can be found in the Wells Gray-Clearwater volcanic field, the Northern Cordilleran Volcanic Province and elsewhere in the Garibaldi Volcanic Belt.</p><br>
<h2>In Film</h2><br>
<p>The Table is featured in Agent Cody Banks and in Stargate: The Ark of Truth in which it is the site of the village where the Ark was hidden. The title sequence of the film features The Table, with a graphics overlay of the village superimposed on it, as well as an aerial tour of the Mount Garibaldi and Tantalus Range area.</p><br>
<p>Llyn Mair  is a 14 acre artificial lake near Maentwrog, in Gwynedd in North Wales . It lies in the area of Tan-y-Bwlch, a little above Plas Tan-y-Bwlch, and is in the catchment area of the River Dwyryd. It was created by William Edward Oakeley  as a 21st birthday present for his daughter Mair and as a water supply. It was built in 1889, and the nearby smaller Llyn Hafod-y-Llyn dates from the same period.</p><br>
<p>Plas Tan y Bwlch is thought to be the first house in North Wales with electric lighting powered from its own hydro-electric station, which was commissioned in the 1890s. A pipeline from the lake fed water to a Pelton wheel, which was located in a small power house on the hillside immediately behind the house. It ceased to operate soon after 1928, when the public hydro-electric power station at Maentwrog began supplying the area. In June 2013 a new hydro-scheme, costing £420,000, and similarly tapping the water from Llyn Mair, was opened. The water falls 60 m to the turbine, and the scheme is expected to meet most of the Plas&#39; electricity needs.</p><br>
<p>The lake is set alongside the B4410 road, a minor road linking the hamlet of Rhyd. The position of the lake bordered with ancient oak woods and its tranquil appearance makes this a popular picnic site for visitors, and it is also a starting point for a number of local country walks. There is some limited parking available just off the road.</p><br>
<p>The narrow gauge Ffestiniog Railway runs through the woods above the lake, and Tan-y-Bwlch railway station can be reached on foot from the lake.</p><br>
<p>The lake also has a notable echo because of the shape of the surrounding hills.</p><br>
<p>Whitewater Lake is a lake in the city of Sudbury, Ontario. The community of Azilda borders its eastern shore.</p><br>
<p>The lake is host to a number of amateur fishing tournaments, and it was the site of an annual powerboat racing championship. It is the site of the Sudbury/Azilda Water Aerodrome, which supports a number of aircraft capable of landing on water. During the winter months, a village of ice huts forms on the lake near Azilda&#39;s Centennial Park.</p><br>
<p>Most of the lake is less than 1.5 m deep (and dangerous for boaters who are unfamiliar with it). Its maximum depth is 11 m.</p><br>

<p>The Georgina River is the north-westernmost of the three major rivers of the Channel Country in Central West Queensland, that also flows through a portion of the Northern Territory, in central Australia. Part of the Lake Eyre basin, the Georgina flows in extremely wet years into Lake Eyre.</p><br>
<p>The river is named in honour of Georgina Mildred Kennedy, the daughter of Queensland governor Arthur Kennedy. The river was originally called the Herbert River before being given its current name in 1890 to avoid confusion with the other river in Queensland that bears that name.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>With its headwaters rising in the Barkly Tableland, north of Camooweal in Queensland, and in the extreme east of the Northern Territory beyond Tennant Creek and to the south draining the northern slopes of the Macdonnell Ranges, the Georgina is formed from several smaller streams over a wide area of north-western Queensland and the eastern Northern Territory. From source to mouth, the Georgina is joined by more than 35 tributaries including the Buckley, Templeton, Burke, Hamilton, Herbert, Ranken, and Sandover rivers; and flows through 26 billabongs. The Georgina flows through the town of Boulia. As the Georgina flows south into the Channel Country, it reaches it confluence with Eyre Creek that, in times of peak flow, empties in the Warburton River and ultimately into Lake Eyre.</p><br>
<p>The basin of the Georgina totals around 232,000 km&sup2, or about the same size as the Australian state of Victoria. Because it is so arid, however, its mean annual flow is only about 0.7 km3. There is such extreme variation that – although streamgauging records are too poor to prove it conclusively – meteorological records leave no doubt that there have been many years of zero runoff&#39; in the entire basin (1905, 1928 and 1961 would without doubt fit into this category), whilst in very wet years such as 1974, 1977 and 2000, runoff can be as high as 6.28 km3 or more.</p><br>
<p>Although a small part of the Macdonnell Ranges drains into the Georgina, most of the catchment is a flat as the Diamantina, though low ranges are very prominent in the north-west of the basin. This western part of the basin has soils that are too infertile to provide nutritious fodder for cattle or sheep and a large proportion is an Aboriginal reserve. The eastern part of the Georgina catchment near Boulia is very similar to the Diamantina and Cooper basins, being grassy plains with heavy cracking clay soils that are quite fertile and provide very good feed in wet years for livestock. The Lake Machattie Area is an important breeding site for waterbirds.</p><br>
<h2>Climate</h2><br>
<p>Climatically, the Georgina catchment tends to be somewhat drier than the Diamantina or Cooper, with average annual rainfall ranging from around 400 mm north of Camooweal to around 225 mm at Bedourie.</p><br>
<p>Extremely dry years can give the entire basin less than 100 mm whilst in 1974, 1977 and 2000 many areas had over 800 mm and some as much as 1,000 mm. Almost all of this rain falls in the summer, and it is quite normal for the period from May to September to not record any measurable falls at all. In extremely wet summer months such as January 1974 or March 1950, most of the catchment can receive as much as 350 mm in a month or 150 mm in a day or two. Temperatures are generally hot, with most areas having maxima of over 30 &deg;C on over 225 days per year. Frosts are rare but have been reported on occasions in all areas of the basin – however even in June and July maxima are around 25 &deg;C.</p><br>
<h2>Flooding</h2><br>
<p>During severe floods the river can be as wide as 15 to 20 km in the upper reaches and in the lower reaches from 25 to 30 km wide. Inundation can last for months at a time, which can disrupt road and rail transport in the area. The highest recorded flood occurred in January 1974.</p><br>
<p>Flooding occurred at Glenormiston Station in 1885 when somewhere between 12 in and 17 in of rain fell over the course of a month. The Georgina River and the Diamatina Rivers both were flooded and the Sandringham station was submerged.</p><br>
<p>The upper watershed in the Northern Territory were subjected to severe flooding in 1901 when Lake Nash Station experienced over 10 in of rain in a single day, with the Georgina River running at almost record high levels. The surrounding areas received over 4 in of rain in 1953 resulting in the River rising over 23 ft, the highest level in over 36 years.</p><br>
<p>The lower reaches flooded in 1950 and again in 1953 following heavy rain events further north. The 1953 flood was 6 in higher at Glengyle Station compared to the 1950 event. The Diamantina River was also in flood and the waters were expected to make it to Lake Eyre.</p><br>
<p>Moderate flooding was experienced along the river, including Glenormiston Station, in 2010 following heavy rains locally and further north in the Georgina catchment.</p><br>
<p>Although it is the driest of the three main rivers of the Lake Eyre Basin, there is evidence that the Georgina has, in the past, actually reached the lake more frequently than either the Diamantina or Cooper. Some wave built shingle terraces suggest that during the Medieval Warm Period Lake Eyre held permanent water. Large increases since the late 1960s in rainfall over the Northern Territory and pastoral areas of South and Western Australia that have not been duplicated over Queensland do suggest an enhanced greenhouse effect in the Medieval Warm Period may have caused the Georgina to regularly fill Lake Eyre. However, far too little evidence exists for any certainty of this.</p><br>
<p>Lake Evans is a freshwater lake in the municipality of Eeyou Istchee James Bay, in the administrative region of Nord-du-Québec, in western Quebec, Canada. This lake is crossed by the Broadback River.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>Surrounded by a generally flat lands including marshes, Lake Evans is located 130 km south-east of James Bay. This lake has an area of 479 km&sup2;. It receives the waters of the "Lake Le Gardeur" (adjacent to the east side) through the Théodat River and Lake Dana (west side neighbor) through Pastukamau pass. Lake Evans is the largest expansion of the Broadback River.</p><br>
<p>Lake Evans has deep bays that give it an irregular contour. Areas surrounding the lake have a generally flat topography, with several marshes, except for the area south of the lake where culminate the Reid and Middleton Mountains.</p><br>
<p>For canoeists, lake is renowned by the difficult portage over Longue Pointe peninsula.</p><br>
<h2>Toponymy</h2><br>
<p>The designation "Evans Lake" has been in use in the late nineteenth century. This lake has been explored and described by geologist Robert Bell and O&#39;Sullivan Surveyor in 1900 and 1901. The name of the river evokes life work of Sir John Evans (1823-1908), archaeologist, geologist and paper manufacturer, an influential member of several learned societies. Evans held the positions of Treasurer of the "Royal Society" from 1878 to 1898, President of the "Numismatic Society" from 1872 to 1908 and president of the "Society of Antiquaries" London in 1885. Evans also is the author in numismatic field of books now considered classics, and in the tools and weapons of prehistoric populations of Britain.</p><br>
<p>Long ago, this lake was designated "Long Lake" or "Lac Turgeon." Initially, the name of this body of water would have been awarded around 1910. The place name Lake Evans was formalized on December 5, 1968 at the Commission de toponymie du Québec.</p><br>
<p>Lake Mistassini  is the largest natural lake by surface area in the province of Quebec, Canada, with a total surface area of approximately 2,335 km² and a net area  of 2,164 km². It is located in the Jamésie region of the province, approximately 360 km east of James Bay. The Cree town of Mistissini is located on Watson Peninsula in the south-east corner of the lake, which separates Baie du Poste from Abatagouche Bay.</p><br>
<p>Extensive forests of Spruce, Birch, Pine, and Fir trees, which support a booming forestry industry, surround the lake.</p><br>
<p>Significant tributaries flowing into the lake include: Chalifour, Pépeshquasati, Takwa, Témiscamie, and Wabissinane.</p><br>
<p>Other nearby lakes include Lake Troilus.</p><br>
<h2>Formation theory</h2><br>
<p>In 2016, it was reported that the arc shaped lake, together with nearby Lake Albanel, may have been formed by a large meteor impact about 2.1 billion years ago. The rest of the 500 km diameter crater is thought to have now been mostly eroded away or buried but geological indications of a major impact have been found in the rocks around the lake. If confirmed this would be the largest impact crater found on the earth.</p><br>
<h2>Etymology</h2><br>
<p>The name Mistassini came from the Cree mista assini or Montagnais mishta ashini, and means large rock; it probably refers a large glacial erratic stone, about 3 m high, located near the outlet of Lake Mistassini into the Rupert River.</p><br>
<p>Over the centuries, it went through many name changes and different spellings. In 1664, on a map by Ducreux, this lake was known as Outakgami. On maps by Jolliet (1684), Jaillot (1685) and Franquelin (1688), the lake was identified as Timagaming. In 1703, the cartographer Guillaume Delisle used the same name, along with the name Mistasin. Laure (1731) and Bellin (1744) showed on their maps the name Lake Mistassins. Other spelling variations of this Native American designation included: Mistacinnee, Mistacsinney, Mistasinne, Mistasinia, etc.</p><br>
<p>In 1808, James McKenzie of the North West Company used the name Lake Mistassini in his writings, the first use of the name in its current form. Nevertheless, other variants persisted still long after: for instance, the explorer James Clouston inscribed Mistassinnie in his diary of 1820, while the geologist Robert Bell mentioned in 1880 the name Misstissinny. Yet, thereafter Mistassini became the accepted form, as evidenced by the map of the province of Quebec drawn in 1880 by Taché, and the expedition report published by Albert Peter Low in 1885, and in his Annual Report of 1900, Bell also adopted the current spelling.</p><br>
<h2>Pre-contact</h2><br>
<p>In the summer of 1948 Rogers and Rogers found 121 prehistoric sites in the region about Lake Mistassini and Albanel. At site 33, a sandy bank 15 to 20 feet high, where the land in back of the banks was comparatively flat and dry, First Nation people in the area in 1948 claimed to have camped since time immemorial. At the time of Roger&#39;s research in 1948, First Nation people were actively still using campsites on 36% of the 121 prehistoric sites.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The existence of this large lake was known to French explorers for a long time before its actual discovery. Even Samuel de Champlain knew of it in 1603. It was finally discovered by Europeans in 1663 as part of an expedition ordered by Governor D&#39;Avaugour and led by Guillaume Couture (first settler of Pointe-Lévy (Lévis) and hero of New-France). He was accompanied by Pierre Duquet and Jean Langlois, as well as by Native American guides; the whole group consisting of a fleet of 44 canoes. They went up the Saguenay River, reached Lake Mistassini and continued on the Rupert River which flows to the Hudson Bay.</p><br>
<p>Thereafter, Lake Mistassini became an important step along the route from the Saguenay to James Bay. In 1672, Charles Albanel crossed the lake in an official mission. On June 18, 1672, he wrote: "we entered the great Lake Mistassirinins; this Lake is named for the rocks with which it abounds, which are of prodigious size." That same year, a fur trading post was established on the lake, the location of which shifted from time to time until 1821 when it was established at the present site of the village Mistissini.</p><br>
<p>Mistassini Cree, camp leader, Alfie Matoush allowed ethnographer Edwards Rogers and his wife to join Matoush&#39;s 13-member hunting group in 1953-4 in their traditional hunting territory in the eastern Subarctic. Rogers observed the variety of game and resources that the Matoush group exploited and noted that they were able to derive a high percentage of the goods necessary for their existence which included an impressive variety of game and resources sufficient to keep their health at a better level than other more sedentary First Nation people who lived in hamlets. Their traditional hunting grounds an area northeast of Lake Mistassini, were near the headwaters of the Eastman River and just south of Noakokan. Lake Indicator is near their southern boundary. Rogers observed that Lake Indicator was used as an early winter base for hunting and trapping and he noted the remains of an earth-covered conical lodge, four house pits, and a log cabin. Rogers noted that the Mistassini First Nations left their summer encampments in late August or early September at the lower end of Lake Mistassini and moved to their hunting grounds where the men built a fall camp. From October through December they lived in early winter camps which were more substantial. This was where they cached their canoes. During the hardest part of the winter they moved to different hunting camps. In April they moved back to the early winter camp then by the end of May they were at their summer camp at the south end of Lake Mistassini.</p><br>
<p>The earth-covered conical lodge, three house pits and the remains of a log cabin, were near the Matoush early winter camp (1953-1954) about mid-way on the west shore of Lake Indicator. The earth-covered conical lodge was used by Matoush&#39;s parents and his siblings and his own family c. 1915-1920 as an early winter camp from October to January.</p><br>
<p>The known distribution of earth-covered conical lodges in the eastern Subarctic extends from the east coast of James Bay at the Eastman River post, the lower Rupert River and Fort George.</p><br>
<p>Lété Island is an island in the Niger River, approx. 16 kilometres long and 4 kilometres wide, located around 40 kilometres from the town of Gaya, Niger. Together with other smaller islands in the Niger River, it was the main object of a territorial dispute between Niger and Benin, which began when the two entities were still under French rule. The island, as well as seasonally flooded land around it, is valuable to semi-nomadic Puel cattle herders as a dry season pasturage.</p><br>
<p>Niger and Benin almost went to war over their border in 1963 but finally chose to settle the dispute through peaceful means. In the early 1990s, a joint delimitation commission was tasked with solving the issue but could not reach an agreement. In 2001 the two parties chose to have the International Court of Justice rule conclusively on the matter. The Court ruled in Niger&#39;s favour in 2005..</p><br>
<p>Lake Kipawa  is a lake in far south-west Quebec, Canada, near the border with Ontario, north of Témiscaming, Quebec. Also see Kipawa River which is the only natural outflow of Kipawa Lake, Gordon Creek in Témiscaming on the south end being artificial.</p><br>
<p>Lake Kipawa is currently the source of debate among Innergex and Hydro Quebec concerning water rights for their competing hydro electric projects.</p><br>
<p>Lake Kipawa has a highly irregular shape, with deep bays (such as Chemagan, des Plongeurs, du Huard, Dorval, Pratt, des Anglais, and Campbell) and large islands (notably McKenzie and aux Ours). It forms a vast labyrinth with many other interconnecting bodies of water. Bordering the lake are the communities of Kipawa, Laniel, and the Keboawek Reserve. The lake is popular with fishermen for its walleye and northern pike abundance, as well as a supply of trout. Various lodges (such as Kipawa Lodge which is located at Edward&#39;s Narrows and Alwaki Lodge, which is located on Thompson Island) bordering the lake offer hunting and fishing tours and accommodations.</p><br>
<p>The lake&#39;s name, of Algonquin origin, has been written in many different forms before "Kipawa" became official in 1968: Kippawa, Kippewa, Kepawa, Keepawe (1884), Kipawe, Kipakowe, Kipahowe.</p><br>
<p>Lake Kipawa was the epicentre of the 2000 Kipawa earthquake.</p><br>
<p>The Kempt Lake is located in the unorganized territory of "Lac-Matawin" in the MRC Matawinie, in the administrative region of Lanaudière, in Quebec, in Canada. This reservoir is located on the route of the Manouane River  in northern Rouge-Matawin Wildlife Reserve.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>Located southeast of Lake Manouane, Kempt Lake is deformed and has many peninsulas and bays. It includes dozens of islands, the most important are the islands "Aux érables" (maple), cedar island and Arikici island.</p><br>
<p>Dike of Bay Gavin</p><br>
<p>Kemp reservoir is contained by the dike Bay Gavin, located in the unincorporated territory of Obaoca Bay, in the MRC Matawinie. This dam was originally built in 1908 and is the property of Hydro-Québec. The dam has a height of 4 m and a holding capacity of 40.7 million m³. The length of the dam is 73 m. The type of dam is made of earth on a foundation of till. The coordinates of the dam are: latitude 47⁰ 32 11" and longitude -74⁰ 11 2". The area of the reservoir is 12,000 ha. The utility of this dam is for hydro-electric purpose.</p><br>
<p>Dam Manouane-A</p><br>
<p>A second dam of a strong capacity on Kempt Lake designated Manouane-A, was built in 1941 for the end of hydroelectricity. The dam has a height of 7 m and a length of 108.8 m. The height of the reservoir is 4.8 m. with an impounding capacity of 407 million m³. The area of the reservoir is 12,000 ha. The catchment area is 1,507 km².</p><br>
<p>Strait between lakes</p><br>
<p>A 6.1 km long strait separates lakes Manouane and Kempt. The distance by road is 173 km from the center of the town of Saint-Michel-des-Saints and Kempt Lake. The road skirts Kempt lake by the East.</p><br>
<h2>Toponymy</h2><br>
<p>The name "Lake Kempt" was recorded on December 5, 1968 at the Bank of place names in Commission de toponymie du Québec (Geographical Names Board of Québec).</p><br>
<p>The Wyoming Monument is an American Revolutionary War monument and gravesite located in the borough of Wyoming, Pennsylvania, in Luzerne County.</p><br>
<p>The monument marks the gravesite of the bones of victims of the Wyoming Massacre, which took place on July 3, 1778. Local residents banded together to defend the area against an invasion of British Tories as well as pro-Tory Native Americans. The battle ended in defeat for the colonial fighters and considerable brutality followed the battle. It was not until October 22, 1778 that a recovery party felt the region safe enough to return to begin recovery of the bodies of those slain in the battle. The remains were gathered and interred in a common grave, only to be dug up again at public ceremonies in 1832 — ceremonies attended by some of the then elderly survivors of the massacre. In 1833, the bones were re-interred in a vault under the present monument.</p><br>
<p>Ownership of the monument is held by the Wyoming Monument Association, originally formed as the Ladies Monumental Association. It is one of the oldest all-female historical groups in the United States.</p><br>
<p>Each year, beginning in 1878 for the 100th anniversary of the battle, a commemorative ceremony is held on the grounds of the stone obelisk. The ceremony is sponsored by the Wyoming Commemorative Association.</p><br>
<p>On August 2, 2008, the monument was struck by lightning, causing some damage and putting the monument in need of repairs. In 2010, the restoration began and the monument, completely repaired and restored, was rededicated at the annual celebration of the Wyoming Commemorative Association on July 4, 2011.</p><br>

<p>Stone Valley Recreation Area is an outdoor recreational and educational facility operated by The Pennsylvania State University. It is located in Huntingdon County near the village of Mooresville. The 700 acre property is located over the mountain from the village of Pine Grove Mills, Pennsylvania along Shaver&#39;s Creek. Hiking and fishing are among the activities available to visitors.</p><br>
<p>The Pennsylvania State University contracted with the federal government in 1940 to construct roads and buildings on the land to help the school&#39;s educational program. In 1954 the land was given fully to the university. A dam was finished in 1960 to give easy access to the area, and Stone Valley Recreation Area was created.</p><br>
<p>Stone Valley Recreation Area is a multi-use park that is shared by the Penn State Forestry department, Shaver&#39;s Creek Environmental Center and Stone Valley Vertical Adventures.</p><br>
<p>Vertical Adventures, which is operated by Penn State Student Affairs is a multi-element high-ropes challenge course serving the university and surrounding community with team development and group building. It also hosts a small summer program for middle school and high school children.</p><br>
<p>The lake at Stone Valley Recreation Area was drained in 2008 when state regulations regarding dam specifications changed. Lake Perez was filled back up in 2014 and is on the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission&#39;s restocking list. All boating and fishing activities resumed as of April 2014.</p><br>
<p>The 1925 F Street Club, also known as the Steedman-Ray House or the Alexander Ray House, is today a historic home that serves as the official residence of the President of George Washington University.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The Greek Revival building was constructed for USA Navy Captain Alexander Ray (1799–1878) in 1849.</p><br>
<p>It was purchased by American University in 1920 and served as the "Downtown Campus" for many years.</p><br>
<p>Laura Curtis, wife of New York lawyer James Freeman Curtis, rented the home in the 1920s.</p><br>
<p>In 1935, the 1925 F Street Club, Inc. purchased the property and operated a private members&#39; club from the building, started by Laura M. Gross.</p><br>
<p>The Club counted many well known and influential men as regular guests, including Presidents Harry Truman, John F. Kennedy, George H. W. Bush and members of their respective Administrations. This popularity could well have been because the Clubhouse was only a few blocks away from the White House.</p><br>
<p>The Clubhouse also served as a popular meeting place of the East Coast elite (in particular those who held powerful positions in the C.I.A. and the Department of State); and who hold informal meetings at the club. It was once labelled as "...the most difficult door to open in Washington D.C.". Indeed, the club was so exclusive that not even its members knew exactly who else belonged entirely. It was the place where men of power and influence dined, drank and socialized as they charted America&#39;s course according to Collier Magazine.</p><br>
<p>It was managed by a Board of Directors consisting of ten members. They were the "Old Guard," from prominent Washington, D.C. families who carefully guarded all operational aspects of the club.</p><br>
<p>The club hosted members of the most prominent families in the United States, as well as senior officials from around Washington D.C. and beyond including the President of the World Bank Group, The Governor of the Bank of England and the Chairman and CEO of Goldman Sachs. The membership totaled about 850 socialites from their era according to Richard Casiano, the General Manager from 1982 until his retirement in 1997. Richard was first hired as a bartender on January 1, 1981, and became the General Manager of the club on July 1, 1982.</p><br>
<p>The Club was operated the same as a well staffed English country manor, which included male staff wearing traditional white-tie uniforms. There was no menu and guests were served whatever was prepared for the day; however, members could order special meals in advance and for their special parties.</p><br>
<p>The F Street Club closed in 1999.</p><br>
<p>The building then served as the Alumni House of The George Washington University. In July 2008, the Alumni House officially became the President&#39;s House and so remains today.</p><br>
<p>The Morrow Plots is an experimental agricultural field at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Named for Professor George E. Morrow, it is the oldest such field in the United States and the second oldest in the world. It was established in 1876 as the first experimental corn field at an American college and continues to be used today, although with three plots of much reduced size, instead of the original ten half-acre lots. The site was designated a National Historic Landmark on May 23, 1968. The fields are managed by the College of Agricultural, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The Morrow Plots occupy a central position on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), between the Main Quad and the South Quad. They are bounded on the south by West Gregory Drive, the north by the Observatory, the east by the Woese Institute for Genomic Biology, and the west by the Undergraduate Library. The plots currently consist of six small fields, each one-tenth of an acre in size. The two northernmost plots have been continuously planted in maize (corn) since 1876. The middle plots were originally planted in a rotation of corn and oats, with the oats replaced by soybeans in 1968. The southern plots were originally planted in a rotation of three years corn followed by three years meadow; this was replaced in 1901 by a rotation of corn, oats, and clover, and in 1953 by corn, oats, and alfalfa.</p><br>
<p>It is popularly believed that the University constructed its Undergraduate Library to the west of the Plots with three stories underground, so that the library would not block the sun from the Morrow Plots. However, the University master plan at the time called for a large open plaza on that end of campus, which was an equally important reason the library was built underground.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The Morrow Plots were begun in 1876 by Professor Manly Miles, who established three half-acre fields with different crop schemes. These were expanded to ten plots in 1879 by George E. Morrow. At first, record keeping was not of the highest caliber, but by the turn of the 20th century it was clear that crop rotation was a useful component in preventing the depletion of soil quality. In the early 20th century, the number of plots were reduced, and their size was also reduced, in order to facilitate expansion of the university facilities. The northernmost plots are the only ones that date to Miles&#39; 1876 establishment; his other plots are now occupied by the observatory.</p><br>
<p>The results of the experiments which were carried out at the Morrow Plots showed that "soil quality is a vital component of agricultural productivity", and that the "use of science and technology... increased crop productivity over four-fold."</p><br>
<p>Pennypacker Mills is a Colonial Revival mansion surrounded by 170 acre of farmland located in Perkiomen Township near Schwenksville, Pennsylvania on the shore of the Perkiomen Creek, approximately 35 mi northwest of Philadelphia. Originally built around 1720 by Hans Jost Hite, it was purchased in 1747 by Peter Pennebacker, and remained privately owned by Pennypackers for eight generations. In 1976, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places.</p><br>
<p>During the American Revolutionary War, George Washington used Pennypacker Mills in the fall of 1777 as a headquarters prior to the Battle of Germantown, and also as a field hospital for injured soldiers after the battle.</p><br>
<p>Pennsylvania governor Samuel Pennypacker made the Mills his summer home in the early 1900s, and lived there for much of his term in office (1903–1907). After his term, he lived at the Mills year-round until his death in 1916. He was an avid collector of antiques and manuscripts, and many of these can still be found on display at the Mills, along with letters and orders written by George Washington.</p><br>
<p>Pennypacker Mills is open to the public for tours Tuesday - Saturday from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm and Sunday 1:00 - 4:00 pm with the last daily tour at 3:30 pm. Admission is free. It also hosts special events such as Civil War reenactments on a regular basis.</p><br>
<p>Lake Burton is a 2,775 acre  reservoir with 62 miles  of shoreline located in the northeastern corner of Georgia in Rabun County. It is the first lake in a six-lake series called the Tallulah River Watershed that follows the original course of the Tallulah River. The chain begins with Lake Burton as the northernmost lake followed by Lake Seed, Lake Rabun, Lake Tallulah Falls, Lake Tugalo, and Lake Yonah. The lakes are owned and operated by the Georgia Power Company to generate hydroelectric energy for Georgia&#39;s largest city, Atlanta. At one time these lakes were the largest producers of electricity in the state of Georgia. At present the lakes provide power only during periods of peak electricity consumption.</p><br>
<h2>History and description</h2><br>
<p>The lake was built in a deep valley located along a 10-mile (16 km) section of the Tallulah River. The Lake Burton Dam was closed on December 22, 1919 and the lake started to fill. The dam is a gravity concrete dam, with a height of 128 ft and a span of 1,100 ft. The spillway is equipped with eight gates 22 ft wide by 6.6 ft high. The total capacity at an elevation of 1,866.6 ft is 108,000 acre.ft, of which 106,000 acre.ft is usable storage. The generating capacity of the dam is 6,120 kilowatts (two units). Lake Burton is the highest Georgia Power lake in Georgia. House owners rent the land under 99 year leases and all the land is owned by the Georgia Power.</p><br>
<p>Lake Burtons name was derived from the town of Burton, which was the second largest town in Rabun County with a population of approximately 200. The former town now lies below the lakes surface. The town (and the lake) was named after local prominent citizen Jeremiah Burton and was situated along the road from Clayton, Georgia to the Nacoochee Valley. Andrew Jackson Ritchie served as the postmaster for the area for several years. Gold was first discovered in Rabun County where Dicks Creek and the Tallulah River come together and was the reason for the town&#39;s founding in the early 19th century.</p><br>
<p>The Lake Burton Fish Hatchery and Moccasin Creek State Park are located on the lake&#39;s west side. The lake is home to several species of fish, including spotted bass, largemouth bass, white bass, black crappie, bluegill, redear sunfish, white catfish, walleye, brown trout, rainbow trout, and yellow perch.</p><br>
<p>The residents of Lake Burton are a mix of permanent residents and seasonal vacationers who together make-up the Lake Burton Civic Association, a local organization whose goal is to maintain the lake through volunteer clean-ups and other such events. The houses prices range from 300,000 to 20,000,000 dollars.</p><br>
<h2>Events of interest</h2><br>
<p>Fourth of July fireworks at Lake Burton have been an annual tradition for more than 25 years. The fireworks display was begun and continues to be run by a lifelong Lake Burton resident, Hal Rhoad. Though not a Lake Burton Civic Association sponsored event, the July 4th fireworks display is funded by donations from Lake Burton area residents and visitors. The fireworks are set off the Saturday before July 4 from Billy Goat Island, an island on the south side of the lake. Most people view the fireworks from boats driven near the island. As Lake Burton is set in the Appalachian Mountains the fireworks echo off the surrounding mountains, providing another auditory level to the visual feast of the fireworks.</p><br>
<h2>YMCA Camp High Harbour</h2><br>
<p>The YMCA of Metropolitan Atlanta operates its primary campus of Camp High Harbour near the headwaters of Lake Burton. This facility is the site of summer residential camps, leadership programs and youth retreats.</p><br>
<h2>2011 tornado</h2><br>
<p>An EF3 tornado struck Lake Burton late on April 27, 2011, damaging the marina at Wildcat Creek and destroying many lake homes. One person was killed (Atlanta businessman E. Earl Patton, a former member of the Georgia State Senate) when his lake house was destroyed by the tornado.</p><br>
<p>Discovery Island is located off the eastern side of Vancouver Island and is viewable from Ten Mile Point, near Cadboro Bay, and Oak Bay. Discovery Island Marine Provincial Park occupies the southern portion of Discovery Island, 3 mi east of Oak Bay. The northern portion of the island is part of Discovery Island Indian Reserve 3, under the control of the Songhees First Nation.</p><br>
<p>Discovery island was named in 1846 by surveyors in honour of HMS Discovery, the ship used by 18th-century British Explorer Captain George Vancouver to chart the coastline of British Columbia between 1792 and 1794 (see the Vancouver Expedition). The adjacent Chatham Islands were named after his escort ship, HMS Chatham.</p><br>
<p>The Lighthouse at Sea Bird Point, the eastern end of Discovery Island, marks the junction of the Haro and Juan De Fuca Straits. These two straits form the border between Canada and the United States. The lighthouse was built in 1886 and manned for 110 years before being fully automated in 1996. Sea Bird Point was named after an American paddle steamer which caught fire and was run aground in 1858 to save the lives of the crew.</p><br>
<p>Designated as a park in 1972, the uninhabited and undeveloped 61-hectare Discovery Island Marine Provincial Park was once inhabited by First Nations people and resident lighthouse keepers. The island was once the home of Captain E.G. Beaumont, who purchased part of the island in 1918. He died in 1967 after living on Discovery Island with his wife for nearly half a century. Beaumont owned roughly 160 acres (half) of Discovery Island, and in his will gave his share of the island to the province of British Columbia. Beaumont was an avid seaman and even in his 80s would regularly row his boat from Discovery Island to Ten Mile Point, where he would go for walks in the woods. Evidence of the Beaumonts beautiful home and gardens overlooking Rudlin Bay can still be seen. The home was designed on a nautical motif by the noted architect Francis Rattenbury.</p><br>
<p>Discovery Island Marine Provincial Park is open year round. There is a camping fee and services provided from May 1 - September 30. During the off-season, there is no fee and no services. There are gravel beaches and a few walking and hiking trails along the shores and through fir and arbutus woodlands. The trail system runs from the lighthouse on Sea Bird Point to Commodore Point and across to the western shore of the park. Hikers can ascend the 38-metre (125 foot) Pandora Hill for improved views of the area and spectacular sweeping views of the Olympic Mountains.</p><br>
<p>In May 2012 a lone wolf took up residence on Discovery Island, the park was closed and attempts to trap the wolf are made but were unsuccessful, it was decided to reopen the park, the wolf has so far proven safe to humans, and was last known to still be on the island to this day.</p><br>
<h2>Climate</h2><br>
<p>Discovery Island has some of the mildest winters in Canada, if not the mildest, even by British Columbia standards. Snowfall is extremely rare- over three-fourths of years do not experience a single snowfall, which is a sharp contrast to the rest of the country.</p><br>
<p>Crystal Springs Reservoir is a pair of artificial lakes located in the northern Santa Cruz Mountains of San Mateo County, California situated in the rift valley created by the San Andreas Fault just to the west of the cities of San Mateo and Hillsborough, and I-280. The lakes are part of the San Mateo Creek watershed.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The original name of the southern or Upper Crystal Springs Reservoir was Laguna Grande, which has a California Historical Marker ("NO. 94 PORTOLA EXPEDITION CAMP - The Portolà expedition of 1769 camped on November 5 at a laguna grande which today is covered by the Upper Crystal Springs Lake.") located at Crystal Springs Dam on Skyline Boulevard, 0.1 mi south of Crystal Springs Road. The Laguna Grande place name is also shown on the 1840s diseño del Rancho Cañada de Raymundo and an 1856 plat of the Rancho de las Pulgas. Lower Crystal Springs Reservoir now covers the town of Crystal Springs which grew up around a little resort town of the same name, located just northwest of the present dam.</p><br>
<p>The two Crystal Springs lakes and San Andreas Lake used to be known as Spring Valley Lakes for the Spring Valley Water Company which owned them. The Spring Valley Water Company named the lakes, the Spring Valley Lakes, after the company. The original Spring Valley was between Mason and Taylor Streets, and Washington and Broadway Streets in San Francisco, where the water company started. When the company went south for more water, the Spring Valley name was carried south too.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The entire reservoir consists of two different reservoir lakes.</p><br>
<p>The southern lake, Upper Crystal Springs Reservoir, was formed when a tributary, Laguna Creek (or Lake Creek), which joined Laguna Grande at the south end, was submerged by construction of an earthen dam (this was the first Crystal Springs Dam) in 1877. In addition to Laguna Creek, Upper Crystal Springs Reservoir is fed by Adobe Gulch which descends from Cahill Ridge south of and parallel to Highway 92 into a wetland marsh then joins the reservoir at Adobe Point.</p><br>
<p>The northern reservoir, Lower Crystal Springs Reservoir, is fed by San Mateo Creek and San Andreas Creek at its north end. It also receives water from Upper Crystal Springs Reservoir via tunnels beneath Highway 92. Below Crystal Springs Dam, lower San Mateo Creek receives limited flows from Lower Crystal Springs Reservoir and descends to the Bay.</p><br>
<p>In 1924, culverts were built through Upper Crystal Springs Dam to hydraulically link Upper and Lower Crystal Springs Reservoirs.</p><br>
<p>Part of the water in the reservoirs comes from local precipitation and the rest is piped in from the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir in Yosemite National Park, as well as the Pilarcitos Creek watershed and Alameda Creek watershed. The entire reservoir was built and owned by a private company, in the form of the Spring Valley Water Company, and eventually was deeded under the ownership and protection of the city of San Francisco. This local protection has ensured the survival of important species in the area, and a set of trails in Crystal Springs Park allows many to enjoy the scenic beauty of the reservoir and the local wildlife. There are giant rainbow trout and bass in the lake. Due to decisions by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC), Crystal Springs Reservoir is not open to the public.</p><br>
<h2>Flora and fauna</h2><br>
<p>A considerable biodiversity of flora and fauna exist in the vicinity of the reservoir, which is located within the California Floristic Province. Among these species are a number of rare and endangered species including Acanthomintha duttonii or San Mateo thornmint, Hesperolinon congestum (Marin Dwarf Flax) and Eriophyllum latilobum or San Mateo Woolly Sunflower.</p><br>
<p>A pair of Bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) built a nest in a Coast Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. menziesii) in March 2012. This is the first bald eagle nest in San Mateo County since 1915, almost 100 years ago. Although initially unsuccessful, they have returned to their nest in the northwest corner of the Lower Reservoir. In 2013, they successfully mated and the fledgling flew North after leaving the nest.</p><br>
<p>The Herman C. Timm House is a house listed on the National Register of Historic Places in New Holstein, Wisconsin, United States. The house is a significant example of Stick style architecture, a rather rare predecessor of Queen Anne Style architecture. The house was the home of an original settler and prominent citizen, Herman C. Timm.</p><br>
<h2>Herman C. Timm's history</h2><br>
<p>Timm came to New Holstein in 1848 from Marne, Germany, at age 14. He made his money operating a feed mill called Calumet Feeds at the north end of the block the house is on.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The home was built in 1873 in a Greek revival style by Kiel contractor August F. Neumann.</p><br>
<p>Local volunteers worked on restoring the house. The house&#39;s Grand Opening occurred on May 31, 1976 as part of the United States Bicentennial celebration. The New Holstein Historical Museum featured an "Early Photos of New Holstein" exhibit as part of the celebration. The home was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. The society operated the home as a house museum.</p><br>
<h2>Disasters</h2><br>
<p>The house had a major roof leak that forced an end to the house tours in 1998. An architectural assessment was performed on the house and the cost to reconstruct the house was estimated between $116,020 and $126,220. Before the roof was repaired, there was a broken pipe in the dining room. The break happened in January 1999.</p><br>
<h2>Restoration and rededication</h2><br>
<p>Only two interior photographs from 1896 exist. The New Holstein Historical Society raised $1.2 million (USAD.) for restoration of the Timm House. The Jeffris Foundation of Janesville, Wisconsin gave the Society a $562,875 grant towards the restoration.</p><br>
<p>Crown Services from nearby Kiel, Wisconsin painted the house. It had to start painting in 2007 because winter temperatures came early in 2006. It finished the job by the July 2007 opening. The company nominated the paint job for a national paint award by Zinsser Company, and it was awarded $10,000 and its "Top Job" winner for 2007. The painters had to deal with lead paint, so worker had to have a lead abatement area to lessen lead poisoning. A minimal amount of damaged siding and trim was replaced to maintain the historic nature of the house. When paint was sprayed, it had to be back brushed to keep the hand-painted look. Two coats of chocolate-colored latex paint were applied. The Timm house paint job was featured on the cover of American Painting Contractor&#39;s March 2008 issue.</p><br>
<p>The reconstruction of the house was completed during the summer of 2007, in time for the city&#39;s Market Street Days festival. The house was rededicated on July 15, 2007. Congressman Tom Petri and state Senator Joe Leibham spoke at the rededication. The registered historic place plaque was displayed. An information sign was unveiled that is easily visible as motorists turn a corner on Highway 57 / 32. People were able to take tours of the house for the first time in nearly ten years, and the first group to tour included Petri.</p><br>
<h2>Architecture</h2><br>
<p>The house features a tower where he could relax and read newspapers. His wife Augusta sometimes slept on the porch on hot summer days beneath its copper roof. Several windows in the living room and vestibule were made from stained glass.</p><br>
<p>A 600 gallon water tank was filled in the non-freezing months providing running water for bathing, cleaning and a bathroom. A lot of the other original furnishings were sold by the family or future tenants so other period pieces were used. Tiny fragments of original wallpaper were found in most rooms during reconstruction and a Swedish company hand-made custom replica wallpaper. The three upstairs bedrooms contain donated historical items like the community&#39;s first sewing machine, a bed warmer, and a trunk.</p><br>
<p>The formal living room ceiling was hand painted and stenciled by Bryan Albert Painting Studio LLC located in Wauwatosa, WI. An Arts & Crafts-style chandelier was added to the room when electricity was installed in 1912. The room&#39;s hardwood floor was installed diagonally which was expensive at the time. An original Eastlake-style fireplace was brought out of storage during the 1974 reconstruction and two original ceramic dogs were placed on top. Next to the living room is the master bedroom which features a closet which were rare at the time since they were taxed as an additional room.</p><br>
<p>Youngs Bay, or Youngs River Bay, is located in the northwestern corner of the U.S. state of Oregon. The Youngs River meets the Columbia River at this point, which is situated between Astoria and Warrenton.</p><br>
<p>The bay is named for the Youngs River, which was discovered in 1792 by William Robert Broughton of the Vancouver Expedition. The river was named for Admiral Sir George Young of the British Royal Navy.</p><br>
<p>There are two road bridges that cross the bay, with the busiest being the new Youngs Bay Bridge, a vertical-lift bridge that spans approximately 1.75 mi and is a two-lane part of U.S. Route 101 running north to south. There is also the Old Youngs Bay Bridge about two miles to the east. For 90 years, until 1986, a 1.6 mi railroad trestle also crossed the bay. Built in 1896 for the Astoria and Columbia River Railway Company, it was later transferred to the Spokane, Portland, and Seattle Railway, and finally to Burlington Northern Railroad. It included a swing-type draw span. The 1964-opened New Youngs Bay Bridge passed over the top of the SP&S bridge near the north river bank. The railroad bridge was used for the last time in 1982 and was dismantled in 1986.</p><br>
<p>The bay is fished extensively for sturgeon and salmon, when in season. Most of the gillnetting community moors and fishes in Youngs Bay. The bay can be seen rising and falling significantly with the tides created where the bay meets the Columbia River, which meets the Pacific Ocean approximately 10 mi to the west.</p><br>
<p>The Ibicuy Islands  are a maze of low-level islands in the east of the Paraná Delta, within Entre Ríos Province, Argentina. They are located between the Paraná and Uruguay Rivers. The islands are part of the Islas del Ibicuy Department and have scattered but important settlements, like their capital Villa Paranacito. The principal access is by the Ibicuy River, a branch of the Paraná River.</p><br>
<p>Ibicuy is a Guaraní word, meaning &#39;sandy area&#39;. The Guaraní were the first inhabitants of the islands. They built embankments of sand and earth as look-outs and flood defences known as cerritos, which can still be seen rising above the dense vegetation which characterises the river delta. It is thought that the Guaraní arrived in Ibicuy in search of the tierra sin mal, the earthly paradise inhabited by the spirit Ñandey, located in the east close to the sea.</p><br>
<p>The islands were settled in the late 19th century and early 20th century by European planters, originally Italians from Montevideo searching for wood for charcoal production. The majority of settlers were from northern and central Europe and were employed in agriculture and forestry, still the predominant industries. In an effort to demarcate, protect and irrigate their lands, settlers dug new channels and filled others in, changing the topography of the islands.</p><br>
<p>The remoteness of the islands - originally accessible only by boat - made them a hideout for outlaws and criminals from Buenos Aires and Montevideo. The marxist Liborio Justo lived there in the 1940s, the harsh environment and the fugitives who inhabited it, inspired his book of short stories, entitled Rio Abajo ("Down the River"), which was later made into a movie with the same title. Nowadays tourism is one of the main activities of the islands, where typical Delta wildlife such as the Neotropic cormorant, capybara and marsh deer can be seen.</p><br>
<p>Land Administration Building is a heritage-listed former government building at 142 George Street, Brisbane City, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Thomas Pye and built from 1899 to 1905 by Arthur Midson for the Queensland Government. It was also known as the Executive Building or  the Old Executive Building. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992.</p><br>
<p>The building was originally occupied by the offices of the Lands and Survey Departments, the Premier of Queensland, the Executive Council, and the Queensland National Art Gallery. It contains a heritage-listed World War I Honour board.</p><br>
<p>Since 1995, the building has been used as the hotel of the Treasury Casino (the casino being located in the former Treasury Building).</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>This four-storeyed masonry government office building was erected between 1901 and 1905. Initially intended as offices for the Lands and Survey Departments, it was finished and occupied in 1905 as the Executive Building, accommodating both the Lands and Survey Departments and offices of the Premier and Executive Council. It is the most prominent Brisbane example of Queensland Government building activity associated with the economic recovery of the late 1890s and with the Federation of Australia.</p><br>
<p>In 1898-1899 plans were prepared under the supervision of chief architect Thomas Pye of the Queensland Government Architects office. Special provisions for the Lands Department included Ministers offices, drafting rooms, photographic and heliographic rooms, and a Land Court. With the inclusion of offices for the Executive Council and Cabinet, a separate entrance in George Street was designed for ministerial access.</p><br>
<p>A £2,900 contract for site preparation and foundations was commenced in 1899, and in 1901 the principal construction contract for £141,000 was let to Brisbane builder Arthur Midson.</p><br>
<p>The use of expanded metal lathing as a re-enforcement to the concrete floors and ceilings was amongst the earliest application of such technology in Australia, and was a first in Queensland.</p><br>
<p>The building was symbolic of Queenslands pride and achievement, and was seen as a showcase for Queensland materials. Granite used as the base course and plinth was obtained from Enoggera and Mount Crosby. Brown freestone from Helidon was used to face the outer walls, and freestone from Yangan near Warwick was used on the colonnade walls. The decorative carving to the facades was completed during 1903-1904. In the north-western elevation an allegorical group representing Queensland mining and agriculture was carved by New South Wales sculptor William Priestly MacIntosh to a design by Thomas Pye. The mantelpieces were constructed of a variety of Queensland timbers (maple, cedar, black bean and silky oak) representing the states timber resources. Allegorical stained glass highlighted the rural nature of the Queensland economy.</p><br>
<p>From 1901, the Queensland National Art Gallery occupied a purpose-designed room the length of the third floor above George Street. In 1930 the art gallery was relocated to the Exhibition Building Concert Hall.</p><br>
<p>Both Executive Council and Cabinet met in the building from 1905 until 1971, when new offices were constructed at 100 George Street, known as the Executive Building. Since then this former Executive Building has been known as the Land Administration Building.</p><br>
<p>The gas lamps on the pavements at the William and George Street entrances were erected by about 1911. Those delineating the George Street entrance appear to have been moved further apart. They still function, lit by natural gas.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The Lands Administration Building is a four-storeyed government office building occupying a site bounded by George Street, Stephens Lane, William Street and Queens Gardens. The form and scale of the building complement the Treasury Building and the Old State Library located nearby. It forms the southeastern edge of the important group of government buildings surrounding Queens Gardens, which also includes the Family Services Building and the William Street retaining wall.</p><br>
<p>The building is constructed of masonry, steel and concrete and faced with sandstone from Helidon and Warwick. It sits on a plinth faced with alternate courses of Enoggera and Mount Crosby granite. The principal elevation to Queens Gardens and the elevations to George and William Streets have banded rustication on the lower two storeys. This two-storeyed base supports a colonnade of Giant order Ionic columns.</p><br>
<p>The design of the facades is in the style of the Edwardian Baroque. At each corner and in the centre of the principal elevation, pavilions jut out terminating the colonnade. The pavilions are enriched with rusticated columns and pilasters. The central pavilion addressing Queens Park is surmounted by an open segmental pediment. This pediment supports an allegorical sculpture depicting agriculture and mining.</p><br>
<p>The building has an entrance in the centre of both the George Street and William Street elevations. Each entrance is marked with a broken segmental pediment. Behind the upper colonnades there is a long recessed balcony. The use of fine wrought iron detail to balustrades, railings and gates compliments the masonry detail.</p><br>
<p>The stained glass in the entrance vestibules and elsewhere in the interior complements the use of sculpture externally. Depicted in stained glass in the William Street vestibule is a sower, a reaper, a pioneer and squatter. The glass in the George Street vestibule depicts a tiller and a herdsman. A marble tablet set into the wall of this entrance is inscribed with the message sent by King George V to the people of Australia on 25 April 1916, establishing the Anzac Day tradition. An honour board commemorating Lands Department staff who served in the First World War is located in the corridor on the first floor.</p><br>
<p>The basic form of the building echoes the layout of the Treasury building. It is a perimeter block building around a central courtyard. A wide hallway runs around most of the building with doorways on either side opening onto rooms that are lit via windows to the courtyard or to the street or garden. The hallway does not continue through the centre of that part of the building located on Stephens Lane. Rooms in this wing are accessed from an arcade on the northeastern edge of the courtyard. Cast-iron balconies also provide circulation around the courtyard. Vertical circulation is provided by fine staircases and lifts associated with the two street entrances. The design also echoes the Treasury building by providing colonnades on the three main elevations.</p><br>
<p>The construction demonstrates an early use of reinforced concrete floors in a large scale building. Steel framing was employed in the roofs over the photographic rooms on the top floor and over the fireproofed sections. Metal roller shutters were installed in the fireproof sections.</p><br>
<p>The principal architectural spaces include rooms formerly used for the Executive Council Chamber, the Land Court, and offices of the Premier and the Minister of Lands, which have a private stairway to George Street. These rooms have ornamental coffered plaster ceilings and timber panelling to dado height. The former Executive Council Chamber has three stained glass windows positioned above the dado which can also be seen from the hallway.</p><br>
<p>The building is very intact, internally and externally.</p><br>

<p>The Tabon Caves, dubbed as the Philippines&#39; Cradle of Civilization, are a group of caves located on Lipuun Point, north of Quezon municipality, in the south western part of the province of Palawan on Palawan Island, in the Philippines. They are part of the Lipuun Point Reservation, which has been protected by the government of the Philippines as a museum reservation to protect the caves and immediate vicinity from deforestation and to preserve the cultural artifacts present there.</p><br>
<p>The caves are named after the Tabon scrubfowl. It is bordered on the south by the town proper of Quezon, Bgy. Panitian on the west, and the West Philippine Sea on the north and east. Out of 215 known caves, 29 have been explored and seven of these are open to the public. The seven include Tabon, Diwata, Igang and Liyang Caves. One of the oldest human bones found in the Philippines, the Tabon Man, was found here in 1962. Other excavated, unexamined remains are stored onsite.</p><br>
<p>The complex is managed by the National Museum and was declared as a National Cultural Treasure by the same institution in February 2011.</p><br>
<h2>Archaeological discoveries</h2><br>
<p>The caves were researched by Dr. Robert B. Fox and a team from the National Museum of the Philippines between 1962 and 1966. The archaeological finds indicate habitation from 50,000 to 700 years ago. The limestone formations in the reservation date back 25 million years to the Lower Middle Miocene Period.</p><br>
<p>The Lipuun Point Reservation, covering a 138 hectare island connected to the Palawan mainland by a mangrove forest, was declared a Site Museum Reservation in April 1972 and was made a priority site for tourism development in 1991 for its natural and cultural heritage.</p><br>
<p>In recent years, verification of facts in addition to further analysis of previously collected samples has allowed for a greater understanding of the site as a whole. Radioisotope dating techniques have been able to show a period of near continuous habitation from 30,000-9,000 years ago. Human remains as well as rock flakes, hammers, and other stone tools indicate the cave may have been used as a workshop. The bone fragments found in the caves have been suggested to have been from the late Pleistocene to early Holocene periods. Previous excavations of the site have also revealed evidence of a diet including pig and deer, which are extinct in the Philippines today.</p><br>
<p>While little new data is available because of the cave&#39;s location and safety concerns, they are slowly being excavated and the old data is being reexamined. Approximately 25% of archaeological sites in the caves have been excavated.</p><br>
<p>Recent research conducted by Philip Maise has included the discovery of giant sculptures, which he believes are older than the Sphinx and were made by the seafaring Saliendra during the last ice age. He has also discovered what he believes to be cave paintings within the burial chambers in the caves depicting the Journey to the West.</p><br>
<h2>Cave use</h2><br>
<p>Earliest cave uses included inhabitation, and the factory like production of stone tools. According to a video by Dr. Fox, a jar burial period began 3000 years ago and lasted until 1500 years ago. This is evidence the area became dominated by people known as the Sa Huỳnh culture.</p><br>
<p>The Sa Huynh adorned their dead with agate, carnelian, and glass beads from India and Iran. Artifacts of this nature, including glass bracelets, were found in the cave and are displayed at the Palawan Cultural Museum in Puerto Princesa.</p><br>
<p>A migration of Sa Huyhn people to Vietnam is accepted by most experts to have been the forebears of the Cham people. These are a people still existing today that created an empire known as Champa.</p><br>
<p>History of the people in the area took on a new significance in modern times owing to the Spratly Islands dispute.</p><br>
<h2>Tabon Caves Garuda Gold Pendant</h2><br>
<p>A gold Ornamental Pendant, from the Tabon caves in the island of Palawan, is an image of Garuda, the eagle bird who is the mount of Hindu deity Vishnu. The discovery of sophisticated Hindu imagery and gold artifacts in Tabon caves has been linked to those found from Óc Eo archaeological site in Thoại Sơn District in southern An Giang Province of Vietnam in the Mekong River Delta. These archaeological evidence suggests an active trade of many specialized goods and gold between India and Philippines and coastal regions of Vietnam and China.</p><br>
<h2>Igang Cave Findings</h2><br>
<p>Igang is one of the upper caves and one of the longest of the complex. It appears to have been the primary burial site and most of the burial jars were found here.</p><br>
<h2>Tabon Cave wall findings</h2><br>
<p>Tabon Cave lends its name to the complex as a whole. In this large cave with a big open chamber, researchers found artifacts indicating trade with China during the Song Dynasty and the Yuan Dynasty. These are now at the Philippine National Museum in Manila.</p><br>
<h2>College of Tabonology</h2><br>
<p>In July 2015, Holy Trinity University in Puerto Princesa, Palawan was selected for the construction of a new college to studies of ancient Palawan man (Tabonology).</p><br>
<p>Nearly all active research stopped after Dr. Fox died.</p><br>
<h2>Security measures</h2><br>
<p>The National Museum of the Philippines carefully guards the cave complex. All visitors are watched to ensure they take nothing but pictures and do not damage the cave walls. Further, all burial jars and remains have been secured.</p><br>
<p>One issue is that new research and exploration of the complex has largely ceased.</p><br>
<p>Valdezcaray is a ski area situated near the resort town of Ezcaray in the upper Oja Valley of the Sierra de la Demanda, Iberian System .</p><br>
<h2>The resort</h2><br>
<p>It has 22 km of marked pistes, and is a growing family resort which has greatly improved its facilities in recent years. The highest point is San Lorenzo peak at 2125 m AMSL, with a vertical descent of 600 m.</p><br>
<p>The base of the area includes the basic ski services and is located at an altitude of 1530 m AMSL. From there, the main chair lift provides access to the pistes. All the hotels and apartments are in the resort town of Ezcaray, 13 km downhill from the ski area.</p><br>

<p>Shipki La is a mountain pass and border post with a dozen buildings of significant size on the India-China border. The river Sutlej, which is called Langqên Zangbo in Tibet, enters India  near this pass. The road is an offshoot of the ancient Silk Road. A spur road on the Indian side rises to an altitude of 4,720 m four km southwest of Shipki La.</p><br>
<p>It is located in Kinnaur district in the state of Himachal Pradesh, India, and Tibet, China. The pass is one of India&#39;s border posts for trade with Tibet along with Nathu La in Sikkim, and Lipulekh in Uttarakhand. The pass is close to town of Khab.</p><br>
<p>Currently the road at the pass is used only for small-scale local trade across the border. Like other border passes along the India-Tibet border, the border is no longer open for non-residents. Most people travelling between India and Tibet by land travel via Nepal.</p><br>
<h2>Sino-Indian trade</h2><br>
<p>It was suggested NH 5 could be used as a route for land access to the Arabian Sea as the Karakoram Highway is much more treacherous for transport. This opening of the border at Shipki La is claimed to potentially increase trade on both sides of the border.</p><br>
<p>Lipulekh  in Tibet. It has been used since ancient times by traders, mendicants and pilgrims transiting between India and Tibet. This is used by Manasarovar pilgrims.</p><br>
<p>Nepal regards Limpiyadhura as the source; India claims Lipu Lekh as the source. Nepal has reportedly tabled an 1856 map from the British India Office to support its position. Kalapani has been controlled by Indias Indo-Tibetan border security forces since the Sino-Indian War with China in 1962. Nepal has called for the withdrawal of the Indian border forces from Kalapani area. In 2015, the Nepalese parliament objected the agreement between India and China to trade through Lipu-Lekh stating that It violates Nepals sovereign rights over the disputed territory. After the Indian prime minister&#39;s visit to China in 2015, India and China agreed to open a trading post in Lipulekh, which was not welcomed by Nepal. Nepal now intends to solve the issue via diplomatic means with China and India. Nepal further considered the decision taken by the neighboring nations as a hegemonic step.</p><br>
<h2>Tourism</h2><br>
<p>This pass links the Chaudans valley of India with the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, and forms the last territorial point in Indian territory. The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, a Hinduism pilgrimage to Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar, traverses this pass. Lipulekh pass is connected to Chang Lobochahela, near the old trading town of Purang (Taklakot), in Tibet.</p><br>
<h2>India-China Trading Post</h2><br>
<p>The pass is first Indian border post to be opened for trade with China in 1992. This was followed by the opening of Shipki La, Himachal Pradesh in 1994 and Nathu La, Sikkim in 2006. Presently, Lipulekh pass is open for cross-border trade every year from June through September.</p><br>
<p>The items cleared for export from India include gur, misri, Tobacco, Spices, pulse, Fafar flour, Coffee, Vegetable oil, ghee and various miscellaneous consumable items, whereas the main imports into India include Sheep Wool, Passam, Sheep, Goats, borax, Yak tails, Chhirbi (butter) and raw Silk.</p><br>
<h2>India-China BPM (Border Personnel Meeting) point</h2><br>
<p>In 2014, India and China discussed using the pass as an additional official Border Personnel Meeting point between the Indian Army and the People&#39;s Liberation Army of China for regular consultations and interactions between the two armies to improve relations.</p><br>
<p>David Fleay Wildlife Park is a heritage-listed wildlife park at Fleays Wildlife Park Conservation Park, Tallebudgera Creek Road, Tallebudgera, Queensland, Australia. It was built from 1952 to 1983. It is also known as Fleays Wildlife Park. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 23 February 2001.</p><br>
<p>Established by Australian naturalist David Fleay in 1952, the Park today is home to many native animals, which are displayed in surroundings similar to their natural habitats. Managed by the Environmental Protection Agency, the Park aims to raise community awareness about the need to protect native animals, especially rare and threatened species. The Park has a long tradition of breeding native animals and also includes an animal hospital for sick, injured and orphaned animals.</p><br>
<p>After investigating areas around Brisbane and South East Queensland, Fleay selected the Tallebudgera Estuary as a suitable site for a fauna reserve in late 1951. He acquired land there for a reserve in 1952, and added further parcels of land to the reserve in 1958 and 1965. Fleay&#39;s Fauna Reserve, as it was originally known, was established as a place of scientific research and education. Snakes, dingoes, scrub turkeys, ospreys, crocodiles and alligators lived at the sanctuary in "benevolent captivity", whilst bandicoots, flying foxes, the endangered eastern bristlebirds, white-breasted sea eagles, wallabies and koalas were free to come and go as they pleased. The Nocturnal house provides visitors the opportunity to view nocturnal animals such as the platypus, yellow-bellied glider, bilby and mahogany glider.</p><br>
<p>In order to ensure the future survival of the sanctuary, David and Sigrid Fleay sold a large portion of the reserve (37 acres) to the Queensland Government in 1982, which became a Conservation Park. The main area of the Fauna Reserve housing the animals (20 acres) was also sold to the Government the following year. The remainder of the site (7.5 acres) was transferred to the Government in 1985. David and Sigrid Fleay continued to live at Fleays Wildlife Park following the transfer of ownership, where David continued his research and kept animals, such as kangaroos, emus, cassowaries and his Galápagos tortoise, Harriet, largely in their original enclosures. The Park closed in 1983 for redevelopment, re-opening in 1988. David Fleay died on 7 August 1993. In October 1995, 7.4488ha of the site was gazetted as Fleays Wildlife Park Conservation Park under the Nature Conservation Act 1992 (Qld) and today is operated by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service for the people of Queensland. The Park was renamed David Fleay Wildlife Park in 1997, in tribute to its founder.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The David Fleay Wildlife Park was established by David Fleay in 1951 as a place of research and education.</p><br>
<p>David Howells Fleay was born in Ballarat in 1907 and established an interest in the Australian bush and its wildlife at an early age. Fleay accepted a teaching position at Ballarat Grammar School and, in 1927, moved to Melbourne where he taught whilst studying for a Bachelor of Science degree and a Diploma of Education at Melbourne University. At Melbourne University he met fellow science student, Mary Sigrid Collie, and they married in 1931, the year in which David Fleay graduated in Zoology, Botany and Education.</p><br>
<p>Between 1931 and 1934, Fleay taught at the Ballarat Church of England Grammar School and at State primary and secondary schools, while continuing his private study of native animals. By 1934 his reputation as a "wildlife man" was sufficiently established that, when Melbourne Zoo decided to set up an Australian section as part of Melbournes centenary celebrations, David Fleay was chosen to design and direct the section. He worked there for three and a half years, during which time he was able to achieve some significant scientific "firsts" such as the first breeding in captivity of emus, scrub turkeys, some birds of prey, the tawny frogmouth and a variety of marsupials including the koala. He constructed his first platypussary (a home for platypuses). His time, however, with the Melbourne Zoo was not particularly happy as he disagreed with management on matters of principle. Reflecting his naturalists viewpoint rather than traditional zoologists&#39; thinking, he insisted that native birds and animals should be fed what they would eat in the wild. He was dismissed over this issue in 1937.</p><br>
<p>By chance, the wildlife sanctuary at Healesville, about 90 kilometres north-east of Melbourne, needed to replace Robert Eadie, who had been the honorary Curator since the early 1930s. In 1937, Fleay was appointed at £7 per week, the first paid Director of the sanctuary, to develop Healesville&#39;s wildlife sanctuary on temperate rainforest on Badger Creek. Fleay introduced 95 large tiger snakes to the sanctuary which were displayed on an island and milked for antivenene purposes. At Healesville, Fleay recommenced his breeding and conservation programs in earnest, achieving worldwide recognition. His greatest achievement at Healesville was breeding the first platypus is captivity in 1943. He designed and built a new platypussary, and, in November 1943, "Corrie" the platypus was born. Despite numerous attempts by other scientist and sanctuaries, Fleay remains the only person to have successfully bred and reared a platypus in captivity.</p><br>
<p>In 1947, David and Sigrid Fleay travelled with three platypuses to New Yorks Bronx Zoo. The platypuses were accommodated in a new platypussary at the zoo, designed to Fleays specifications. During the Fleay&#39;s stay in the United States, Fleay inspected the modern methods of housing and feeding animals at a number of zoos including the New York Zoological Park, Staten Island Zoo, National Zoological Park in Washington and the Golden Gate Zoo in San Francisco. It is not known whether he brought back with him from the United States any ideas which he intended to implement in Australia.</p><br>
<p>David Fleay returned to Healesville on 13 October 1947 to discover that the Board had fired him during his absence, for the alleged unauthorised donation of other sanctuary animals to the Americans. Whilst the accusation was false, this did not diminish the Board&#39;s hostility toward Fleay. After much public outcry, Fleay continued in a lesser role at Healesville as a consultant. Fleay continued to maintain his private fauna collection until 1951 when the Victorian Government banned private individuals from asking for and accepting admission fees from members of the public wishing to view personal collections of native fauna. This situation prompted Fleay to find a more suitable location which would enable him to carry out his research into the life and habits of native birds, animals and reptiles, and consequently, he and Sigrid Fleay moved north to Queensland.</p><br>
<p>In late 1951 David Fleay, after investigating around Brisbane and south-east Queensland, selected the Tallebudgera Estate as a suitable site for a fauna reserve. According to Fleay, the attraction of the site was the flood-free forested slopes and gullies, good run off, koala fodder gums with koalas in residence and the presence of fish, mammals and birds. The area at the time was used by small crop farmers who supplied the Victorian market in winter. The site preferred by Fleay comprised three properties owned by three separate individuals. Further, the land was not for sale and Fleay did not have the capital to purchase.</p><br>
<p>Persistence paid off, however, and Fleay steadily acquired the land in the names of DH and MS Fleay. He acquired Portions 20A (just over four acres), 21A (just over four acres) and 22C (just over nine acres) in May 1952. In July 1952, Portion 23A (just over seven acres) was purchased in Mary Sigrid Fleay&#39;s name. Portion 18A (just over twenty-one acres) was bought in October 1952. Further land acquisitions were made in June 1958 with the purchase of Portion 19A (just over 15 acres) and later, around 1965 a purchase of just over seven acres. This last portion became an additional car park.</p><br>
<p>Fleays West Burleigh sanctuary was to be a place of research and education and David Fleay objected to descriptions of the place as a zoo. Fleay stated that "Its a place where the animals are kept in conditions as close as possible to the natural environment - where they can breed freely and be studied" and "Were not in the job of sacrificing animals for the sake of showing them and I dont have a lot of time for many modern zoos."</p><br>
<p>Many of Fleays animals were transported from Victoria and so animal enclosures were built rapidly. By October 1952, Fleay had constructed an interim platypussary. This was a large concrete water tank with artificial burrows and straw at one end, based on his design at Healesville. Large aviaries for the sea eagles, wedge-tailed eagles and the peregrine falcons were constructed, along with accommodation for the barking owl, great eagle owl and white goshawk. The barking owls cages were built close to the house so that David Fleay could hear them.</p><br>
<p>The original layout of the sanctuary was designed by Fleay, who used a compass to ensure that each cage received breezes and the morning sun. Fleay designed the cages and specified the dimensions and the "furniture". The cages were always painted "Lawn Green" with "Mail Red" roofs. The timber was not undercoated or chemically treated. Chickenwire covered the platypus tank and raptors&#39; cages to keep out carpet snakes. The sanctuary opened its doors to its first visitors on Easter Sunday 1952. Steadily new cages were built by David Fleay and his volunteers. The wedge-tailed eagles had a large timber enclosure with a frame inside in which they could build a nest. The cages had an inner shell of wire netting to guard against cyclonic blows and carpet pythons.</p><br>
<p>In 1955, a new, outdoor variety platypussary was constructed. This platypussary was later taken over by scrub turkeys who buried it under mounds of earth. A new, superior platypussary was built in 1958 with money provided by the United States in return for three platypuses taken by David Fleay to New York&#39;s Bronx Zoo.</p><br>
<p>The sanctuary survived principally through the hard work of David Fleay and his family, and at times, with the assistance of the local community. The family tended the animals and Sigrid Fleay provided teas on the verandah of the house to visitors. Sick and injured animals were brought to Fleays at all hours of the day and night, and at its peak the sanctuary cared for 450 animals. Volunteer labour and donations were vital to the sanctuary&#39;s survival.</p><br>
<p>The Fleay house was the original farmhouse on the property and, by its style and details, appears to have been built around 1910. It was purchased by Fleay in 1952 and was used as both the Fleay family residence and the base of operations for Fleays wildlife park during David Fleays running of the place. From the period 1952 to 1985 the upper floor was used principally as the Fleays residence. The lower floor was used for a range of park activities. Sick and injured animals were treated; food for the animals was prepared, including breeding rats and mice for food and snake specimens in bottles lined the walls. After the handover of the park to the Queensland Government in 1983, Fleay continued to live in the house until his wife&#39;s death in 1987, during which time the house was modified. After remarrying in 1987, Fleay left the house and lived in another residence adjacent to the park. He returned to live in the house in 1991 until his death in 1993.</p><br>
<p>David Fleays achievements at the sanctuary were numerous. In 1955, he achieved the first known captive breeding of the mulgara, followed in 1958 by the breeding of the planigale (a midget marsupial). In 1958 he successfully delivered a further three platypuses to New Yorks Bronx Zoo and later that year was able to construct a new and improved platypussary at the West Burleigh sanctuary with a small grant awarded to him by the New York Zoological Society. In 1959, he achieved the first captive breeding of the taipan. Possibly his best known successes at Fleays were with owls and other birds of prey. His was the first known captive breeding of the powerful owl (1968), sooty owl (1969), grey goshawk (1971), mainland masked owl (1971), grass owl (1972), crested hawk (1975) and the wedge-tailed eagle (1977).</p><br>
<p>In 1970, Fleay continued his attempts to breed platypuses in a platypussary which, although slightly modernised, was largely similar to the one he built at Healesville, 28 years previously. There was no similar success at the sanctuary, although in 1972, Fleay did discover a small dead baby (50 days old) at the entrance to the burrow.</p><br>
<p>In recognition of the quality and value of his research and breeding programs, Fleay was awarded an MBE in 1960, an AM and Advance Australia Award in 1980 and was appointed an Associate of the Queensland Museum in 1978. In 1979, Fleay was appointed a Fellow of the Explorers&#39; Club in New York. The accolades continued in 1984 when he was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Science by the University of Queensland and appointed a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow.</p><br>
<p>To ensure that the Fleays&#39; sanctuary could survive intact, David and Sigrid Fleay decided to sell the land to the Queensland Government for a nominal amount. In 1982, a large portion of the land owned by the Fleays (37 acres) was sold to the government. The following year, the main area of the Fauna Reserve where the animals were enclosed (20 acres) was also sold to the government. The remainder of the site (7.5 acres) was transferred in 1985. This is the current public carpark. Under the terms of the handover, the Fleays continued to live at the sanctuary.</p><br>
<p>Some of the old enclosures, such as the old goshawk enclosure, were deemed beyond repair and were demolished. Minor repairs were made to the platypussary and small adjustments made to the barking owl aviary. A new platypus display and barking owl and powerful owl cages were designed by Fleay and were positioned according to his specifications. Fleay continued to work at Fleays Wildlife Park (as it was known) and to keep animals largely in their original enclosures. In 1983 the park closed for redevelopment. It reopened in July 1987, but without the original precinct being open to the public as it was considered unsafe.</p><br>
<p>David Fleay died on 7 August 1993 and his death was lamented by many. The regard in which he was held by his professional colleagues and the community is partly illustrated by the awards and honours bestowed upon him during his lifetime.</p><br>
<p>In October 1995, 7.4488 hectares of the site was gazetted as the "David Fleay Wildlife Park" under the Nature Conservation Act 1992, and is operated by the Environmental Protection Agency (Queensland)Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service. Currently, the original precinct is off-limits to the public due mainly to the poor condition of the concrete paths and some enclosures. It is used for holding off-displays and sick or injured animals and for captive breeding. Many of the original enclosures are still in use.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The original section of the David Fleay Wildlife Park comprises an area in the south-central section of the park. Over the years, the park has expanded so that it now almost completely surrounds the original section. David Fleay Wildlife Park is surrounded by 37.3 hectares of conservation park (Tallebudgera Creek Conservation Park). Part of the David Fleay Wildlife Park is bordered by Tallebudgera Creek Road to the west and Kabool Road to the south.</p><br>
<p>There are a number of enclosures and structures in the original precinct. Some enclosures were purpose-built, such as the platypussary, which was used exclusively for keeping platypuses. Other enclosures and structures, however, have been used for many purposes and to keep different animals over time.</p><br>
<p>The aviary, platypussary and the former Fleay home are located in the original section of the David Fleay Wildlife Park, to the south of the main section.</p><br>
<h3>Aviary (Wedge-tailed Eagle Enclosure) (enc 1)</h3><br>
<p>The aviary is 9.1 metres long x 4.8 metres wide x approximately 5.0 metres high. It is a sawn timber framed structure with birdwire to the walls and roof. The south-west corner of the walls and roof are partially enclosed with Super-6 corrugated asbestos cement and corrugated iron. Some corrugated iron sheeting, approximately 600 mil1imetres, has been used to retain the high south side. Perches are made from sawn timber and some tree branches.</p><br>
<h3>Platypussary (enc 4 - second enclosure)</h3><br>
<p>The platypussary is constructed on a concrete slab. It is 9.5 metres long x 4.9 metres wide x approximately 3.5 metres high and is an open-sided timber framed structure supported on sawn timber posts. The structure has a Super-6 corrugated asbestos cement roof with small areas of translucent roof sheeting. The platypussary has been partially enclosed with hardboard sheeting to the north and south ends.</p><br>
<p>The long, narrow, in-situ poured concrete and fibreglass covered concrete blockwork contains tanks with fine steel mesh covers. The concrete blockwork and in-situ poured concrete burrowing chambers are attached to the eastern and western ends of the tanks. Some early signage remains intact in the platypussary.</p><br>
<h3>Former Fleay Home</h3><br>
<p>The house is a timber framed, weatherboard clad, corrugated iron roofed building with a pyramidal hip roof extended in bungalow style over the verandahs with a small gable to the front porch. The lower floor has been enclosed with flat asbestos cement sheets. Various windows treatments include timber casement, sliding, and double-hung windows and more recent aluminium sliding windows. The verandahs on the western and southern sides have been partially enclosed.</p><br>
<p>Internally, the walls and ceilings are predominantly lined with vertically joined tongue and groove boards with door openings incorporating decorative timber arches and fanlight panels with Federation era motifs. Much of the interior has been painted white. A modern kitchen has been installed. The bathroom has also been refitted. A Super-6 corrugated asbestos cement-lined carport is attached to the eastern side of the house. Currently, the downstairs area is used for storage and the upstairs area is unoccupied.</p><br>

<h3>Tree Kangaroo/Scrub Turkey Enclosure (enc 2)</h3><br>
<p>The enclosure is built on a concrete slab on the ground, measuring 7.9 metres by 5.1 metres approximately. It is a 3.5 metre high timber-framed structure with birdwire to the north, east and south walls and eastern half of the roof. In the south-west corner, the walls are sheeted with flat asbestos cement roofing.</p><br>
<h3>Owls Enclosure (enc 3)</h3><br>
<p>The enclosure is a 2.5 metres high, timber framed structure sheeted with asbestos cement to much of the perimeter and birdwire to the remaining area. The enclosure measures 3.3 metres by 2.2 metres. It has a super-6 corrugated asbestos cement roof.</p><br>
<h3>Barking Owl Enclosure (enc 5)</h3><br>
<p>Measuring 4.7 metres by 2.7 metres, the enclosure is an approximately 3 metre high, timber framed structure sheeted with flat fibre cement to the east side and chickenwire to the north side. A super-6 corrugated asbestos cement is located to the south the retaining wall and to the western side and west end of the roof. Chickenwire is located at the east end of the roof. Some early signage remains intact.</p><br>
<h3>Saltwater Crocodile and Alligator Pool (enc 6)</h3><br>
<p>The shallow concrete pool is surrounded by 10.2 metre by 7.6 metre by 1 metre high concrete blockwork walls topped with steel tube posts and birdwire used to enclose the sides and roof. Viewing panels are located in the northern wall with timber posts below, providing possible evidence for a former viewing platform. A timber sleeper retaining wall is located to the south side of the pool.</p><br>
<h3>Winter-Sun - Flying Fox and Carpet Python Enclosure (enc 7)</h3><br>
<p>The enclosure is built on a concrete slab on the ground, measuring 4.2 metres by 3.7 metres half-height concrete walls with timber framed walls and roof above. Birdwire and woven wire mesh is located above the concrete walls. The structure has a super-6 corrugated asbestos cement roof with some translucent sheeting and wire mesh panels. The structure is enclosed on the east, south and most of the west sides and is open on the northern side. Some early signage remains intact.</p><br>
<h3>Taipanary (enc 8)</h3><br>
<p>The enclosure is built on a concrete slab on the ground, measuring 7.3 metres by 9.2 metres. The enclosure is a 3 metre high, timber framed structure sheeted with corrugated iron. The roof is steel framed with approximately 30% covered with super-6 corrugated asbestos cement and the remainder covered with birdwire and hessian sacks.</p><br>
<h3>Goura Pigeons Enclosure - 2nd Enclosure (enc 9)</h3><br>
<p>The enclosure is a 12.6 metre by 6 metre by 4 metre high tubular, steel framed structure on a concrete blockwork base. The walls and roof are covered with chainwire except for the south-west corner, which is covered with shadowline asbestos cement sheeting. The earth floor has slate "waterfall" and "creek" water features.</p><br>
<h3>Goura Pigeons Enclosure - Original Enclosure (enc 10)</h3><br>
<p>The enclosure has an earth floor and measures 4.6 metres by 3.1 metres. The timber framed structure is approximately 3 metres high with walls to the east, south and west sides sheeted with flat asbestos cement. The enclosure is open to the north side with fine metal mesh. Approximately 70% of the roof is covered with super-6 corrugated asbestos cement, while the remainder is covered with fine mesh. Super-6 corrugated asbestos cement sheeting is located on the south retaining wall.</p><br>
<h3>Cuscus Enclosure (enc 11)</h3><br>
<p>The enclosure is built on a concrete slab on the ground, measuring 3.7 metres by 2.4 metres. The enclosure is a 2.5 metres high, timber framed structure sheeted with flat asbestos cement to the east, south and west sides. The enclosure is open to the north side with mesh. The roof is sheeted with super-6 corrugated asbestos cement</p><br>
<h3>Fluffy Gliders (enc 13)</h3><br>
<p>The enclosure is built on a concrete slab on the ground, measuring 2.5 metres by 2 metres. The enclosure is a 2 metres high timber framed structure on a concrete blockwork upstand. The enclosure is built up against a kiosk block wall to the east. The north and south walls are sheeted with flat fibre cement. Open mesh is located on the west side. The roof is sheeted with super-6 corrugated asbestos cement with a small mesh section.</p><br>
<h3>Kiosk - 2nd Kiosk (building 14)</h3><br>
<p>The enclosure is built on a concrete slab on the ground, measuring 6.7 metres by 6.7 metres. The enclosure is a 4 metre high, unpainted, concrete blockwork structure with a timber framed, red, concrete-tiled gable roof and aluminium windows. Some early signage remains intact.</p><br>
<h3>Powerful Owl Enclosure (enc 15)</h3><br>
<p>The enclosure is built on a sloping concrete slab on the ground, measuring 6.6 metres by 3.1 metres. The enclosure is an approximately 4 metres high timber framed structure, clad on all sides with unpainted sawn hardwood weatherboards. Birdwire is located in a panel in the centre of the north wall. The roof is clad with super-6 corrugated asbestos cement sheeting except for a central mesh panel. A meshed horizontal vent panel is located at a low level on the southern side.</p><br>
<h3>Tasmanian Devils Enclosure (enc 16)</h3><br>
<p>The enclosure measures 5.2 metres by 3.1 metres. It is an approximately 3 metres high, timber framed structure with super-6-formed base walls to the south and part of the east walls with sheet metal above to the east and north. Vertical timber boarding is located on the remaining base walls with fine metal mesh above to the east and north. The roof is sheeted with super-6 corrugated asbestos cement roof sheeting.</p><br>
<h3>Crested Hawks Enclosure - 2nd Enclosure (enc 17)</h3><br>
<p>The enclosure measures 7.1 m by 3.6 metres by approximately 4 metres high. It is a tubular, steel-framed structure with metal mesh to the walls and roof. The south-east corner walls and roof are enclosed with corrugated iron. Original black paint has weathered back to bare metal.</p><br>
<h3>Squirrel Gliders and Carpet Pythons Enclosure (enc 18)</h3><br>
<p>The enclosure is built on a concrete slab on the ground, measuring 5.5 metres by 2.5 metres. It is a 2.5 metres high, timber framed structure enclosed on the east, south and west sides with super-6 corrugated asbestos cement sheeting. Full-height birdwire is located on part of the northern side. A half-height super-6-formed concrete wall is located to the remainder of the northern side. The skillion roof is sheeted with super-6 corrugated asbestos cement.</p><br>
<h3>Tortoise and Freshwater Crocodile Enclosure (enc 19)</h3><br>
<p>The enclosure is a concrete slab on the ground measuring 5.2 metres by 2.5 metres with a sloping pond floor. In-situ poured concrete base walls have tubular steel framing with wire mesh located on the upper half of the north wall.</p><br>
<h3>Reptiles Enclosure (enc 20)</h3><br>
<p>The enclosure measures 3.3 metres by 2.2 metres. It is an approximately 2.5 metres high, timber framed structure with timber boarding to the lower walls and angled metal mesh above the north side. The south side is fully enclosed with flat asbestos cement sheeting. The skillion roof is sheeted with super-6 corrugated asbestos cement.</p><br>
<h3>Brown Snakes Enclosure (enc 21)</h3><br>
<p>The enclosure measures 4.6 metres by 2.5 metres. It is an approximately 2.5 metres high structure with concrete blockwork base walls and tubular steel posts supporting upper level metal mesh and a super-6 corrugated asbestos cement skillion roof. Flat asbestos cement sheeting is located on the west wall. The enclosure has elaborate timber perches and a steel framed and sheeted gate.</p><br>
<h3>Rattle Snakes Enclosure (enc 22)</h3><br>
<p>The enclosure is built on a concrete slab on the ground, measuring 3.3 metres by 2.4 metres. It is an approximately 2.4 metres high structure with base walls sheeted with flat asbestos cement and timber boarding. The upper walls are covered with angled metal mesh. The structure is fully enclosed with plywood sheeting to the south-east corner. The eastern side of the skillion roof is sheeted with super-6 corrugated asbestos cement.</p><br>
<h3>Hairy-nosed Wombats Enclosure (enc 23)</h3><br>
<p>The enclosure is built on a concrete slab on the ground, measuring 9.6 metres by 4.8 metres. It is an approximately 1.2 metres high semi-circular concrete blockwork structure open to the air except for a small reinforced concrete roofed area in the north-east corner. Reinforced concrete pipe tunnels are inserted in the east and west ends.</p><br>
<h3>Flinders Island Wombats Enclosure (enc 24)</h3><br>
<p>The enclosure is built on a concrete slab on the ground, measuring 6.8 metres by 2.4 metres. It is an approximately 2.5 metres high, timber framed structure with super-6-formed concrete lower walls. The structure has fine metal mesh to the west wall and full height super-6 corrugated asbestos cement sheeting to the south-east corner. The structure has a super-6 corrugated asbestos cement skillion roof with mesh panelling to the west end.</p><br>
<h3>Potteroos Enclosure (enc 26)</h3><br>
<p>The enclosure measures 7.5 metres by 3.7 metres. It is an approximately 1 metre high timber framed and sheet metal clad fence, with tubular steel posts angled in to support a birdwire perimeter to approximately 1.8 metres high.</p><br>
<h3>Wedge-tailed Eagle Enclosure - Original enclosure (enc 27)</h3><br>
<p>The enclosure measures 9.6 metres by 6.7 metres. It is an approximately four metres high timber framed structure with sapling corner posts and sawn timber framing. The walls are enclosed on the eastern half with birdwire and on the western half with super-6 corrugated asbestos cement sheeting. The structure has a super-6 corrugated asbestos cement flat roof. It has been substantially altered from the original by roofing and wall enclosures.</p><br>
<h3>Grass Owls Enclosure (enc 28)</h3><br>
<p>The enclosure is built on a concrete slab on the ground, measuring 6.4 metres by 3.9 metres. It is an approximately 4 metres high timber framed structure enclosed on the east, south and west sides with flat asbestos sheeting and hessian, and on the north side with birdwire and hessian. The structure has a super-6 corrugated asbestos cement gable roof.</p><br>
<h3>Platypussary - Original enclosure (enc 29)</h3><br>
<p>The enclosure is built on a concrete slab on the ground, measuring 6.4 metres by 3.2 metres. It is an approximately 3 metres high timber framed structure enclosed on the east, south and west sides with flat asbestos cement sheeting and vertical timber boarding. It is enclosed on the north side with birdwire. The structure has a super-6 corrugated asbestos cement skillion roof t the west end and a birdwire roof to the east end. A small enclosure is located to the west of the platypussary.</p><br>
<h3>Boobook Owls Enclosure (enc 30)</h3><br>
<p>The enclosure is a 1.9 metres-sided octagonal timber framed structure with an octastyle roof.</p><br>
<h3>Koalas Enclosure (enc 31)</h3><br>
<p>The enclosure is built on a concrete slab on the ground, measuring 8 metres by 3.4 metres. It is an approximately 4 metres high tubular steel-framed structure enclosed to the east and south sides with shadowline asbestos cement sheeting and chickenwire to the north and west sides. The structure has a metal deck gable roof with a central panel of chickenwire.</p><br>
<h3>Death Adders Enclosure (enc 32)</h3><br>
<p>The enclosure is built on a concrete slab on the ground, measuring 1.2 metres by 1.2 metres. It is an approximately 1.2 metres high timber framed structure on concrete base walls. The east and west walls are enclosed with flat asbestos cement sheeting. The north and south walls are open. The structure has a super-6 asbestos cement skillion roof. The enclosure contains an early chopping block possibly from the house.</p><br>
<h3>Cockatoos Enclosure (enc 33)</h3><br>
<p>The enclosure is built on a concrete slab on the ground, measuring 5.5 metres by 1.7 metres. It is an approximately 3 metres high tubular steel-framed structure covered in chainwire. The south half of the gable roof is covered with super-6 corrugated asbestos cement sheeting. The upper parts of the south wall are enclosed with flat asbestos cement sheeting.</p><br>
<h3>Platypuses Enclosure (enc 34)</h3><br>
<p>The enclosure is built on a concrete slab on the ground, measuring 10.2 metres by 8.8 metres. It is an approximately 3 metres high open-sided post-supported timber structure with a super-6 corrugated asbestos cement skillion roof. The structure has fibreglass lined concrete blockwork tanks with concrete blockwork burrowing chambers. A timber deck is located on the north side.</p><br>
<h3>Platypuses Enclosure (enc 34)</h3><br>
<p>The enclosure is built on a concrete slab on the ground, measuring 4.4 metres by 1.8 metres. It is an approximately 3 metres high timber framed structure with walls enclosed to the eastern half with flat asbestos cement sheeting and on the western half with birdwire. The structure has a super-6 corrugated asbestos cement gable roof to the eastern half and birdwire to the western half.</p><br>
<h3>Enclosure 36 (Use unknown)</h3><br>
<p>The enclosure is built on a concrete slab on the ground, measuring 1.2 metres by 1 metre. It is an approximately 1 metre high timber framed structure with walls enclosed on three sides and woven mesh to the north side. The structure has a super-6 corrugated asbestos cement skillion roof.</p><br>
<h3>Enclosure 37</h3><br>
<p>The enclosure is built on a concrete slab on the ground, measuring 1.6 metres by 1.4 metres. It is an approximately 2 metres high timber framed structure with walls enclosed on the east, south and west sides with flat asbestos cement sheeting. It is open to the north side. The structure has a super-6 corrugated asbestos cement skillion roof attached to the house.</p><br>
<h3>Kite Enclosure (enc 38)</h3><br>
<p>The enclosure has an earth floor and measures 4.2 metres by 2 metres. It is an approximately 2.5 metres high timber framed structure with flat asbestos cement sheeting to the south-east corner and chickenwire to the remaining walls. The structure has a super-6 corrugated asbestos cement skillion roof to the east end with chickenwire to the west end.</p><br>
<h3>Sooty Owls Enclosure (enc 39)</h3><br>
<p>The enclosure is built on a concrete slab on the ground, measuring 5.2 metres by 4.5 metres. It is an approximately 3 metres high timber framed structure enclosed along the western half with flat asbestos cement sheeting and along the eastern half with chickenwire. The structure has a super-6 corrugated asbestos cement skillion roof.</p><br>
<p>A network of paths and stairs connects most of the enclosures to both the house and the original public carpark and entry off Kabool Road. These are generally laid out in an east-west direction paralleling the natural contours of the site. The level pathways are connected between levels by stairways running north-south. Much of the path network has been damaged by either ground subsidence or tree root movement. Other miscellaneous structures include a range of modern, pre-fabricated meal sheds and enclosures used mainly for storage.</p><br>
<h2>Heritage listing</h2><br>
<p>David Fleay Wildlife Park was listed on the Queensland Heritage Register on 23 February 2001 having satisfied the following criteria.</p><br>
<p>The place is important in demonstrating the evolution or pattern of Queensland&#39;s history.</p><br>
<p>Established in 1951 by world-renowned naturalist Dr David Fleay, forming part of the initial stage of development, the David Fleay Wildlife Park is significant for its contribution to Queenslands history, having a long tradition as a place for breeding and displaying native Australian animals, to draw community attention to Australian wildlife and the need to conserve Australias native animals.</p><br>
<p>The place demonstrates rare, uncommon or endangered aspects of Queensland&#39;s cultural heritage.</p><br>
<p>As a type of zoo, which is defined as an enclosure where live animals are kept for public exhibition, the David Fleay Wildlife Park is further significant, as there are few such enclosures found in Queensland.</p><br>
<p>Retaining the enclosure in which the first wedge-tailed eagle was bred in captivity, as well as the platypussary and other breeding and displaying enclosures, the David Fleay Wildlife Park is significant for its rarity and for the high level of intactness of the layout of the original section of the park.</p><br>
<p>The place is important in demonstrating the principal characteristics of a particular class of cultural places.</p><br>
<p>The David Fleay Wildlife Park is significant as it provides examples of various types of timber-framed, steel-framed, blockwork structures and enclosures used in the fauna reserves. Of particular significance is the platypussary, the design for which, while modernised, is based on David Fleay&#39;s early, pioneering work.</p><br>

<p>The David Fleay Wildlife Park is significant for its association with Dr David Fleay, known locally as the "father of conservation". It was during his time at the sanctuary that Fleay bred in captivity the first wedge-tailed eagle. The regard in which he was held by his professional colleagues and the community is illustrated by the awards and honours bestowed upon him during his lifetime.</p><br>
<p>The Mayfair Music Hall was an English music hall-styled vaudeville theater devised and created by entrepreneur Milt Larsen, located in Santa Monica, California.</p><br>
<p>This theater was designed by architect Henry C. Hollwedel, and built in 1913 as the Santa Monica Opera House. Shortly afterward, it was renamed the Majestic Theater and featured silent movies and split week vaudeville acts.</p><br>
<p>The theater was remodeled after sound was introduced in the late twenties.</p><br>
<p>The theater was rather plain and was modernized during the sixties.</p><br>
<p>Milt Larsen, John Shrum and Thomas Heric transformed the venue into a Victorian music hall in 1972 and produced British variety shows there for 8 years. The ornate boxes and staff work were rescued from the grand old Belmont Theater, a major movie palace adjacent to the famed Bimini Baths at 1st and Vermont in Los Angeles.</p><br>
<p>Entrepreneur Larsen&#39;s full traditional music hall productions featured noted actors and performers, such as Bernard Fox, Beatrice Kay, Larry "Seymour" Vincent, Mousie Garner, Ian Whitcomb, Eubie Blake, Gene Bell, English entertainer Joyce Howard, and other actors and musical stars of the day.</p><br>
<p>In later years it later became the home for Chicago&#39;s Second City Television and The A-List.</p><br>
<p>In 1974, the theater was used to film the famous "Puttin on the Ritz" sequence in Young Frankenstein. The building is also a prominent setting in Henry Jagloms 1987 film Someone to Love, rather presciently as a forlorn theater on the verge of being torn down to make way for a shopping center.</p><br>
<p>The theatre was damaged in the 1994 Northridge earthquake, and the owner gutted the building and removed all the ornate decor. The building was demolished in 2010.</p><br>
<p>The Frankstown Branch Juniata River is a 46.0 mi tributary of the Little Juniata River in Blair and Huntingdon Counties, Pennsylvania, in the United States.</p><br>
<p>The headwater tributaries of the Frankstown Branch rise on the slopes of the Allegheny Front south of Altoona. The Frankstown Branch forms at the village of Claysburg by the confluence of Beaverdam Creek and South Poplar Run, then flows north along the western base of Dunning Mountain. Passing just east of Hollidaysburg, the river turns east briefly before heading northeast along the western base of Lock Mountain. Turning southeast, the river breaks through the mountain in a water gap and passes Williamsburg, then turns north again, now against the western base of Tussey Mountain. Again the river turns east to break through a water gap, then passes the borough of Alexandria before joining the Little Juniata River to form the main stem of the Juniata River.</p><br>
<p>The Warrior Ridge Dam and Hydroelectric Plant is located on the Frankstown Branch Juniata River in Logan Township and Porter Township in Huntingdon County.</p><br>
